  1. A fern is a plant of the class Filicales, 
  2. related to horsetails and clubmosses. Ferns 
  3. are spore-bearing, not flowering, plants, and 
  4. most are perennial, spreading by low-growing 
  5. roots. The leaves, known as fronds, vary 
  6. widely in size and shape. Some taller types, 
  7. such as tree-ferns, grow in the tropics. 
  8. There are over 7,000 species.
