  1. A fax is the transmission of images over a 
  2. telecommunications link, usually the 
  3. telephone network. When placed on a fax 
  4. machine, the original image is scanned by a 
  5. transmitting device and converted into coded 
  6. signals, which travel via the telephone lines 
  7. to the receiving fax machine, where an image 
  8. is created that is a copy of the original.
