  1. An experiment in science, is a practical test 
  2. designed with the intention that its results 
  3. will be relevant to a particular theory or 
  4. set of theories. Although some experiments 
  5. may be used merely for gathering more 
  6. information about a topic that is already 
  7. well understood, others may be of crucial
  8. importance in confirming a new theory or in
  9. undermining long-held beliefs. 
  10. The manner in which experiments are
  11. performed, and the relation between the
  12. design of an experiment and its value, are
  13. therefore of central importance. In general
  14. an experiment is of most value when the
  15. factors that might affect the results
  16. (variables) are carefully controlled.
