Incident at Ballarat, Australia, when about
150 goldminers, or `diggers', rebelled
against authority. They took refuge behind a
wooden stockade, which was taken in a few
minutes by the military on 3 Dec 1854. Some
30 diggers were killed, and a few soldiers
killed or wounded, but the majority of the
rebels were taken prisoner. Among those who
escaped was Peter Lalor, their leader. Of the
13 tried for treason, all were acquitted,
thus marking the emergence of Australian
democracy.
