  1. (ER) a membranous structure in eukaryotic
  2. cells. It stores and transports proteins
  3. needed elsewhere in the cells and also
  4. carries various enzymes needed for the
  5. synthesis of fats. The ribosomes, which carry
  6. out protein synthesis, are attached to parts
  7. of the ER. Under the electron microscope, ER
  8. looks like a series of channels and vesicles,
  9. but it is in fact a large, sealed, baglike
  10. structure crumpled and folded into a
  11. convoluted mass. The interior of the `bag',
  12. the ER lumen, stores various proteins needed
  13. elsewhere in the cell, then organizes them
  14. into transport vesicles formed by a small
  15. piece of ER membrane budding from the main
  16. membrane.
