French `grey eminence'. a power behind a
throne; that is, a manipulator of power
without immediate responsibility. The
nickname was originally applied (because of
his grey cloak) to the French monk Francois
Leclerc du Tremblay (1577-1638), also known
as Pere Joseph, who in 1612 became the close
friend and behind-the-scenes adviser of
Cardinal Richelieu.
