An element is a substance that cannot be
split chemically into simpler substances. The
atoms of a particular element all have the
same number of protons in their nuclei (their
atomic number). Elements are classified in
the periodic table. Of the 109 known
elements, 95 are known to occur in nature
(those with atomic numbers 1-95). Those from
96 to 109 do not occur in nature and are
synthesized only, produced in particle
accelerators.
