Spanish `the child' warm ocean surge of the
Peru (Humboldt) Current, so called because it
tends to occur at Christmas, recurring about
every ten years or so in the E Pacific off
South America. El Nino causes the trade winds
to cease, so that the cool ocean currents
driven by them stops and there is an influx
of warm water from the west. It can disrupt
the climate of the area disastrously, and has
played a part in causing famine in Indonesia
1983, bush fires in Australia because of
drought, rainstorms in California and South
America, and the destruction of Peru's
anchovy harvest and wildlife 1982-83.
