Name given to two collections of early
Icelandic literature, which together
constitute our chief source for Old Norse
mythology. The term strictly applies to the
Younger or Prose Edda, compiled by Snorri
Sturluson, a priest, about 1230. The Elder or
Poetic Edda is the name given to a collection
of poems discovered by Brynjolfr Sveinsson
about 1643, written by unknown Norwegian
poets of the 9th to 12th centuries.
