  1. A code number for additives that have been
  2. approved for use by the European Commission
  3. (EC). The E written before the number stands
  4. for European. E numbers do not have to be
  5. displayed on lists of ingredients, and the
  6. manufacturer may choose to list additives by
  7. their name instead. E numbers cover all
  8. categories of additives apart from
  9. flavourings. Additives, other than
  10. flavourings, that are not approved by the EC,
  11. but are still used in Britain, are
  12. represented by a code number without an E.
