First of the broad-spectrum antibiotics to be
used commercially. It was discovered in a
Peruvian soil sample containing the bacillus
Streptomyces venezuelae, which produces the
antibiotic substance C11H12Cl2N2O5, now
synthesized. Because of its toxicity, its use
is limited to treatment of life-threatening
infections, such as meningitis and typhoid
fever.
