  4. Asquith to reduce embarrassment caused by the
  5. incarceration of suffragettes accused of
  6. violent offences against property. When they
  7. embarked on hunger strikes, prison
  8. authorities introduced forced feeding, which
  9. proved humiliating and sometimes dangerous to
  10. the women. Following a public outcry, the
  11. hunger strikers were released on a licence
  12. that could be revoked without further trial.

  14. suffragette mice by its adoption of powers of
  15. release and rearrest.
