  3. standard candle. It measures the brightness
  4. of a light itself rather than the amount of
  5. light falling on an object, which is called
  6. illuminance and measured in lux. One candela
  7. is defined as the luminous intensity in a
  8. given direction of a source that emits
  9. monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 x
  10. 10^-12 Hz and whose radiant energy in that
  11. direction is 1/683 watt per steradian.
