Avon is the Celtic name for river. There are
several rivers of this name in England and
Scotland. The principle three being the
Warwick Avon which joins the Severn at
Tewkesbury and is almost 150km long. The
Bristol Avon which, after rising in the
Cotswolds, enters the Bristol channel at
Avonmouth and is almost 120km long. The
Wiltshire Avon, which rises in Malborough
Downs and after around 105km enters the
English Channel at Christchurch.
Avon was a county of South West England, and
was formed in 1974 from the city and county
of Bristol and parts of North East Somerset
and South West Gloucestershire.
