Town in Spain, 90 km/56 mi NW of Madrid;
population (1986) 45,000. It is capital of
the province of the same name. It has the
remains of a Moorish castle, a Gothic
cathedral, and the convent and church of St
Teresa, who was born here. The town walls
are among the best preserved medieval
fortifications of those in Europe.
