Any of several low-growing plants of
the rose family. Wood avens or herb bennet
Geum urbanum grows in woods and shady places
on damp soils, through most of Europe, N
Asia, and N Africa. It has yellow
five-petalled flowers and pinnate leaves.
Water avens Geum rivale has nodding pink
flowers and is found in marshes and other
damp places. Mountain avens Dryas octopetala
grows in mountain and arctic areas of Europe,
Asia, and North America. A creeping
perennial, it has white flowers with yellow
stamens.
