  1. An avalanche is the falling of a mass of snow
  2. and ice down a steep slope. Avalanches occur
  3. because of the unstable nature of snow masses
  4. in mountain areas. Changes of temperature, 
  5. sudden sound, or earth-borne vibrations may 
  6. trigger an avalanche, particularly on slopes
  7. of more than 30°. The snow compacts into ice
  8. as it moves, and rocks may be carried along,
  9. adding to the damage and danger caused.
  10. Avalanches are particularly hazardous in ski
  11. resort areas.
