  1. Asthma is a chronic condition characterized
  2. by difficulty in breathing due to spasm of
  3. the bronchi (air passages) in the lungs. 
  4. Attacks may be provoked by allergy, 
  5. infection, and stress. The incidence of 
  6. asthma may be increasing as a result of air
  7. pollution and occupational hazard. Treatment
  8. is possible with the use of bronchodilators,
  9. which relax the bronchial muscles and thereby
  10. ease the breathing. Extrinsic asthma, which
  11. is triggered by exposure to irritants, such
  12. as pollen and dust, is more common in 
  13. children and young adults. Less common, 
  14. intrinsic asthma tends to start in the middle
  15. years. Growing evidence that the immune 
  16. system is involved in both forms of asthma
  17. has raised the possibility of a new approach
  18. to treatment. Although the symptoms are 
  19. similar to those of bronchial asthma, cardiac
  20. asthma is an unrelated condition and is a 
  21. symptom of heart deterioration. Asthma 
  22. affects more than two million people in the 
  23. UK, and causes around 2,000 deaths per year. 
  24. Asthmatics may monitor their own status by 
  25. use of a peak-flow meter, a device that 
  26. measures how rapidly air is breathed out. 
  27. Peak-flow meters are available on 
  28. prescription in the UK.
