The armadillo is a MAMMAL, with an armour of
bony plates on its back. Over 20 species live
between Texas and Patagonia and range in size
from the fairy armadillo at 13cm (5in) to the
giant armadillo, which measures 1½m (4½ft)
long. Armadillos feed on insects, snakes,
fruit, and carrion. Some can roll into an
armoured ball if attacked, whilst others rely
on burrowing for protection. Some species of
armadillos can have up to 90 peglike teeth.
