  1. Antivivisection is the opposition to 
  2. VIVISECTION, that is, experiments on living
  3. animals, which is practised in the 
  4. pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries on 
  5. the grounds that it may result in discoveries
  6. of importance to medical science. 
  7. Antivivisectionists argue that it is immoral
  8. to inflict pain on helpless creatures, and
  9. that it is unscientific because results 
  10. achieved with animals may not be paralleled
  11. with human beings. They also argue that it is
  12. unjust to make animals suffer in order that
  13. people may benefit, and that vivisection has
  14. not added to people's power over disease. 
  15. Antivivisectionist groups, such as the 
  16. Animal Liberation Front, sometimes take 
  17. illegal action to draw attention to their
  18. cause.
