  1. site of the ancient capital of the Khmer
  2. Empire in NW Cambodia, north of Tonle Sap.
  3. The remains date mainly from the 10th-12th
  4. centuries AD, and comprise temples originally
  5. dedicated to the Hindu gods, shrines
  6. associated with Theravada Buddhism, and royal
  7. palaces. Many are grouped within the
  8. enclosure called Angkor Thom, but the great
  9. temple of Angkor Wat (early 12th century)
  10. lies outside. 
  11. Angkor was abandoned in the 15th century, and
  12. the ruins were overgrown by jungle and not
  13. adequately described until 1863. Buildings on
  14. the site suffered damage during the civil war
  15. 1970-75.
