  1. device for measuring wind speed and liquid
  2. flow. The most basic form, the cup-type
  3. anemometer, consists of cups at the ends of
  4. arms, which rotate when the wind blows. The
  5. speed of rotation indicates the wind speed. 
  6. Vane-type anemometers have vanes, like a
  7. small windmill or propeller, that rotate when
  8. the wind blows. Pressure-tube anemometers use
  9. the pressure generated by the wind to
  10. indicate speed. The wind blowing into or
  11. across a tube develops a pressure,
  12. proportional to the wind speed, that is
  13. measured by a manometer or pressure gauge.
  14. Hot-wire anemometers work on the principle
  15. that the rate at which heat is transferred
  16. from a hot wire to the surrounding air is a
  17. measure of the air speed. 
  18. Wind speed is determined by measuring either
  19. the electric current required to maintain a
  20. hot wire at a constant temperature, or the
  21. variation of resistance while a constant
  22. current is maintained.
