  1. Breed of dog known officially from 1977 as
  2. the German shepherd. It is about 63 cm/26 in
  3. tall, and has a wolflike appearance, a thick
  4. coat with many varieties of colouring, and a
  5. distinctive gait. They are used as police
  6. dogs because of their high intelligence.
