  3. given to the district of Whitefriars between
  4. Fleet Street and the Thames. It afforded
  5. sanctuary to debtors and outlaws, a privilege
  6. derived from the convent of the Carmelite
  7. Order, established there 1241. In 1697 this
  8. privilege was withdrawn.
