North American Indians formerly living along
the Ottawa River and the northern tributaries
of the St Lawrence in E Canada. Many now live
on reserves in E Ontario, W Quebec, and the
NE of the US; others have chosen to live
among the general populations of Canada and
the US. Algonquian languages are spoken by
many other native peoples on the Atlantic
coast and elsewhere, and include Cree,
Blackfoot, and Cheyenne.
