  1. A measure of the amount of alcohol in a
  2. drink. Wine is measured as the percentage
  3. volume of alcohol at 20 degrees C; spirits in
  4. litres of alcohol at 20 degrees C, although
  5. the percentage volume measure is also
  6. commonly used. A 75 cl bottle at 40% volume
  7. is equivalent to 0.3 litres of alcohol. See
  8. also proof spirit. In the US the proof gallon
  9. system is used; one US proof gallon is
  10. equivalent to 0.73 UK proof gallon.
