A measure of the amount of alcohol in a
drink. Wine is measured as the percentage
volume of alcohol at 20 degrees C; spirits in
litres of alcohol at 20 degrees C, although
the percentage volume measure is also
commonly used. A 75 cl bottle at 40% volume
is equivalent to 0.3 litres of alcohol. See
also proof spirit. In the US the proof gallon
system is used; one US proof gallon is
equivalent to 0.73 UK proof gallon.
