  6. inhabited; the largest island has a small
  7. town, Mariehamn. When Finland became
  8. independent 1917, the Swedish-speaking
  9. islanders claimed the right of
  10. self-determination, and were granted
  11. autonomous status 1920. The main sectors of
  12. the island economy are tourism, agriculture
  13. and shipping.
