Aerial attack, usually on a civilian
population. In World War II (1939-45), raids
were usually made by bomber aircraft, but
many thousands were killed in London in 1944
by German V1 and V2 rockets. The air raids on
Britain 1940-41 became known as the Blitz.
The Allies made air raids over European
cities.
