Capital of Gujarat, India; population (1981)
2,515,195. It is a cotton-manufacturing
centre, and has many sacred buildings of the
Hindu, Muslim, and Jain faiths. Ahmedabad was
founded in the reign of Ahmad Shah 1412, and
came under the control of the East India
Company 1818. In 1930 Gandhi marched to the
sea from here to protest against the
government salt monopoly.
