  1. In chemistry, the force of attraction between
  2. chemical elements, which helps to keep them
  3. in combination in a molecule. A given element
  4. may have a greater affinity for one
  5. particular element than for another (for
  6. example, hydrogen has a great affinity for
  7. chlorine, with which it easily and rapidly
  8. combines to form hydrochloric acid, but has
  9. little or no affinity for argon).
