  1. French extreme nationalist political movement
  2. founded 1899, first led by Charles Maurras
  3. (1868-1952); it stressed the essential unity
  4. of all French people in contrast to the
  5. socialist doctrines of class warfare. Its
  6. influence peaked in the 1920s. Initially
  7. nationalist and republican it was opposed to
  8. capitalism and parliamentarism, but from 1914
  9. it became predominantly nationalist. In the
  10. 1920s the movement obtained a degree of
  11. respectability through an alliance with the
  12. former prime minister Clemenceau and seats in
  13. the chamber of deputies. By the 1930s, Action
  14. Francaise had been superseded by more radical
  15. right-wing movements such as the Jeunesses
  16. Patriotes and the Croix de Feu.
