In law, one of the proceedings whereby a
person or agency seeks to enforce rights in a
law court. Actions fall into three principal
categories, namely civil (such as the
enforcement of a debt), penal (where a
punishment is sought for the person sued),
and criminal (where in Britain the Crown
prosecutes a person accused of an offence).
