  1. Herbaceous plant Aconitum napellus of the
  2. buttercup family, with hooded blue-mauve
  3. flowers, commonly known as monkshood. It
  4. produces aconitine, a powerful alkaloid with
  5. narcotic and analgesic properties. There are
  6. about 100 species of the genus Aconitum
  7. throughout the N temperate regions, all of
  8. which contain poison. Winter aconite Eranthus
  9. hyemalis also belongs to the buttercup
  10. family, but has yellow
  11. buttercup-like flowers with six petals and a
  12. ruff of leaves below.
