  1. Achene is a dry, one-seeded FRUIT that 
  2. develops from a single ovary and does
  3. not split open to disperse the seed.
  4. Achenes commonly occur in groups, such as
  5. fruiting heads of buttercup Ranunculus 
  6. and clematis. The outer surface may be
  7. smooth, spiny, ribbed, or tuberculate,
  8. depending on the species. An achene with part
  9. of the fruit wall extended to form a 
  10. membranous wing is called a samara.
