1. A collective bet, usually on horse races
(normally four or more), such that the
winnings from one race are carried forward as
the stake on the next, resulting in a
potentially enormous return for a small
initial outlay. Bookmakers usually restrict
winnings to an upper limit. The largest
amount ever paid out on an accumulator bet is
$1,627,084.40 to two men at Santa Anita,
California in 1987. Their winnings came from
a $64 9-horse accumulator bet.
