  9. If you want to try the demo before installing it, make sure you double-
  10. click the "MakeAssign" icon. If you fail to run this, page headers in the
  11. demo will be shown in ugly blocky characters. By default the demo uses the
  12. 'times' and 'courier' fonts in sizes that didn't came with your WorkBench.

  26. Because the demo is freely distributable (see the Docs/legal.html file
  27. in this archive for details), there may still be outdated versions hanging
  28. around on some BBS-s, CD-ROMs, etc, that don't give you a good impression
  29. of the capabilities of the current version of AWeb.
  30. If you downloaded this archive directly from Aminet (NOT from a CD), you
  31. may safely assume that it is up to date.

  35. INTRODUCTION
  36. ------------
  37.  
  38. AWeb is a fast and powerful World Wide Web browser for the Amiga computer.
  39.  
  40. It offers the following features:
  41.  
  42.  o AWeb can use a wide range of TCP-stacks: AmiTCP/IP, I-Net225, AS-225
  43.    or compatible. The TCP stack can be started automatically (*) when it is
  44.    needed. Without TCP stack running, you can still view local files.
  45.  
  46.  o AWeb uses extensive internal multitasking, which leads to total
  47.    asynchroneous and parallel network access. Images are starting to load
  48.    while the document is still loading. It is possible to follow a link
  49.    while the previous document is still loading. A separate network status
  50.    window shows all pending network and local file accesses. All network
  51.    accesses can be interrupted immediately.
  52.  
  53.  o The HTML-3.2 standard is (almost) fully supported, including tables,
  54.    image alignment (*), colours (*), etc. For buggy pages not conforming to
  55.    the standard, AWeb offers a compatibility mode.
  56.  
  57.  o AWeb supports the use of proxies for HTTP, FTP, Gopher and Telnet.
  58.    Because some proxies can't handle forms or other special cases, the use
  59.    of proxies can be temporarily disabled from the menu.
  60.  
  61.  o The HTTP and Gopher protocols are supported internally. By using
  62.    external programs, FTP, Mailto, Telnet (*) and News (*) can be used too.
  63.    HTTP user authorization is supported.
  64.  
  65.  o AWeb lets you load all images, delay all image loading, or load only
  66.    clickable maps and delay other images. For delayed images, the ALT text
  67.    is taken into account. Transparent GIFs are supported. The 24-bit picture
  68.    datatype (picturedtV43) is supported.

  70.  o AWeb supports background sounds on pages, provided you have a datatype
  71.    for the sound installed. (*)
  72.  
  73.  o AWeb can print the visited pages on a graphical printer. (*)
  74.  
  75.  o An easy popup menu allows you to perform many different functions on
  76.    any link (like load in background, open in new window) or image (like
  77.    save to disk, flush, view with external viewer). (*)

  79.  o AWeb has a fast, persistent, disk-based cache. The cachebrowser (*)
  80.    allows easy off-line browsing and cache management.
  81.  
  82.  o To improve network speed, host names and network addresses are cached
  83.    so addresses are looked up only once during a session.
  84.  
  85.  o AWeb can open it's windows on the default public screen, on a named
  86.    public screen or open its own screen.
  87.  
  88.  o AWeb has a hierarchical hotlist, with options (*) to group entries.
  89.    In extension to its own hotlist, AWeb can read other hotlists, like
  90.    those of AMosaic and early IBrowse betas.

  92.  o An advanced settings requester is integrated in the program.

  94.  o AWeb has an ARexx interface (*), and a unique and powerful shell command
  95.    interface.

  101. REQUIREMENTS
  102. ------------
  103.  
  104. AWeb needs:
  105.  o OS 3.0 or better.
  106.  o At least 2MB of memory as an absolute minimum. 3 MB or more is
  107.    highly recommended.
  108.  o Either AmiTCP/IP, I-Net225 or AS-225 if you want to access the Internet,
  109.    or a TCP stack that is compatible with one of these. Examples of
  110.    compatible products are Miami and TermiteTCP.
  111.  o Appropriate picture datatypes (GIF, JPEG) to show inlined images.
  112.  o The ClassAct gadget kit (included in this distribution).

  116. INSTALLATION
  117. ------------
  118.  
  119. To install AWeb, just double-click the Install icon.
  120.  
  121. NOTE: During installation of AWeb, the installer tool might give an
  122. error message like: "unable to compile script".
  123. This is most likely caused by some misbehaving application installation,
  124. that has copied an obsolete version of the Commodore Installer utility to
  125. your hard drive. Make sure the Installer version in the SYS:C drawer is
  126. "installer_2 2.17 (1993-02-13)" or better. This version can be found on
  127. the Amiga Workbench 3.x Install floppy disk.
  128. Also, delete any copies of the Installer program from your SYS:Utilities
  129. drawer.

  131. If you want to try AWeb before a permanent installation, make sure to
  132. double-click the "MakeAssign" icon first. It makes the necessary assigns
  133. that AWeb needs to find the ClassAct classes and the large fonts.

  141. HELP key when running the demo to bring up the documentation.
