Windows 98 driver software for your ELSA graphics board.
The driver supports 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in
all resolutions available on used ELSA board.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Contents
This directory contains the following files:
README.TXT the file you currently look at

MMPOWER.INF File for multiscreen sessions under
Windows 98, if Synergy II is second board.
In case of trouble during or after installation, please
make sure you have all the files mentioned above!

3. Installation
3.1 Installing ELSA graphics board for Windows 98
First install the Standard-VGA driver, then shut down your
computer and exchange the graphics board with your
Synergy II.
3.2 Installing downloaded driver packages
Driver packages from the web are self-extracting EXEs. The
files are temporary copied to e.g. c:\elsainst directory
and an automatic driver setup is started. Tools are
installed, too. After finishing the setup or canceling the
procedure the extracted installation files are deleted,
including the temporary created folder.
3.3 Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install
After Windows recognized the ELSA graphics adapter choose
'Have Disk...'. If you are updating the driver manually,
select 'change...' in the advanced settings of the diplay
properties. Now browse through the paths and select the
proper display driver subdirectory (e.g.
SYNERGY2\WIN9X).Windows will copy the driver files and
prompt you to reboot the computer. After restarting,
Windows is running with the ELSA display drivers active. If
your ELSA graphics adapter is not the primary display
adapter in Windows 98, you have to activate the hardware by
clicking on the connected monitor bitmap in the global
windows display settings.
You have to install the tools ELSA Info and WINman Suite
manually in this case. You can find the file ELSATOOL.INF
in the folder DRVTOOLS. Please install the tools via the
right mouse button.
3.4 Installation extension
The drivers installation routine will additionally create
the ELSA Settings and ELSA 3D Settings property pages and
install an OpenGL ICD. The drivers setup included in
self-extracting driver packages or the driver disk will
install additional tools like WINman Suite and ELSAinfo. In
case your graphics adapter is
provided with video I/O capabilities, the setup will
install the software components for these devices, too.
In all following Windows sessions you can change the
resolution without rebooting your system.

5. Release notes
5.1 DirectX (DirectDraw/Direct3D support)
It is strictly recommended that you install DirectX5 or
higher to make sure that the display driver works
correctly.
The display driver do support DirectDraw/Direct3D from
DirectX 5/6, but to use it in an application, you must
install DirectDraw/Direct3D. The Microsoft
DirectDraw/Direct3D components are not included in the
standard retail version of Windows 98. You need an
installation of DirectX 5/6.
DX6core.exe in: CD-Drive:\Winware\MSAPPS\DIRECTX6\
5.2 Problems with Mainboards
If your mainboard has no Intel chipset it may be necessary
to install a chipset specific software patch to get best
support and performance using the AGP port. Normally this
patch should be delivered on CD with your system or
mainboard. Otherwise you may get the newest patches on
the websites of the chipset vendors.
Other chipset vendors are, e.g.: VIA, SIS, ALI.

If you have any questions about full AGP support on non
Intel mainboards please consult your distributor.

It is necessary to install and use the specified INF -
file delivered with your monitor. For information about to
install please look above or use the windows documentation.

6. Known Bugs and Operating Notes
This section documents known anomalies or problems and
gives hints on work arounds.
- If you install the ELSA display driver on a system with
an previously installed nVIDIA driver, the registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
OpenGLDrivers\RIVATNT will not be updated. Replace
"nv3ogl.dll" with "ELSAEIIO.DLL" manually.
- Do not use "Custom Direct3D Settings" -names with more
than twenty characters in the "3D-Settings" property
tabs. Some failures may occur while using WINMANSuite.
- Task switching while 3D applications are active leads to
corruption of textures in some cases
- The horizontal frequency of resolution 480x360 works is
too low for most monitors. Please take a look at 5.3.
- OpenGL screen savers crash if an additional suspend
operation is executed by the system or manually.
- Switching VESA modes to windowed mode leads to a system
crash.
- For best display quality, in the 'More Direct3D' section
of 3D Settings Texel Alignment should be set to "upper
left corner".
- Mouse trails are not displayed.
- In Windows 98 it may happen that the Synergy II does not
work as a secondary device. Windows has problems to
initialize properly the BIOS of the graphics board, if
the size of the BIOS file is larger than 32kB.
In this case please install the file MMPOWER.INF via
right mouse button from the folder \SYNERGY2\WIN9X.
