  48.         This file explains how to setup and to configure the ELSA
  49.         Windows 98 driver software for your ELSA graphics board.
  50.

  52.         The driver supports 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in
  53.         all resolutions available on used ELSA board.

  72.         In case of trouble during or after installation, please
  73.         make sure you have all the files mentioned above!

  77. 3.      Installation
  78.  
  79. 3.1     Installing ELSA graphics board for Windows 98
  80.  
  81.         First install the Standard-VGA driver, then shut down your
  82.         computer and exchange the graphics board with your
  83.         Synergy II.
  84.  
  85.  
  86. 3.2     Installing downloaded driver packages
  87.  
  88.         Driver packages from the web are self-extracting EXEs. The
  89.         files are temporary copied to e.g. c:\elsainst directory
  90.         and an automatic driver setup is started. Tools are
  91.         installed, too. After finishing the setup or canceling the
  92.         procedure the extracted installation files are deleted,
  93.         including the temporary created folder.
  94.  
  95. 3.3     Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install
  96.  
  97.         After Windows recognized the ELSA graphics adapter choose
  98.         'Have Disk...'. If you are updating the driver manually,
  99.         select 'change...' in the advanced settings of the diplay
  100.         properties. Now browse through the paths and select the
  101.         proper display driver subdirectory (e.g.
  102.         SYNERGY2\WIN9X).Windows will copy the driver files and
  103.         prompt you to reboot the computer. After restarting,
  104.         Windows is running with the ELSA display drivers active. If
  105.         your ELSA graphics adapter is not the primary display
  106.         adapter in Windows 98, you have to activate the hardware by
  107.         clicking on the connected monitor bitmap in the global
  108.         windows display settings.
  109.         You have to install the tools ELSA Info and WINman Suite
  110.         manually in this case. You can find the file ELSATOOL.INF
  111.         in the folder DRVTOOLS. Please install the tools via the
  112.         right mouse button.
  113.  
  114. 3.4     Installation extension
  115.  
  116.         The drivers installation routine will additionally create
  117.         the ELSA Settings and ELSA 3D Settings property pages and
  118.         install an OpenGL ICD. The drivers setup included in
  119.         self-extracting driver packages or the driver disk will
  120.         install additional tools like WINman Suite and ELSAinfo. In
  121.         case your graphics adapter is
  122.         provided with video I/O capabilities, the setup will
  123.         install the software components for these devices, too.
  124.  
  125.         In all following Windows sessions you can change the
  126.         resolution without rebooting your system.

  149. 5.      Release notes

  151. 5.1     DirectX (DirectDraw/Direct3D support)
  152.  
  153.         It is strictly recommended that you install DirectX5 or
  154.         higher to make sure that the display driver works
  155.         correctly.
  156.  
  157.         The display driver do support DirectDraw/Direct3D from
  158.         DirectX 5/6, but to use it in an application, you must
  159.         install DirectDraw/Direct3D. The Microsoft
  160.         DirectDraw/Direct3D components are not included in the
  161.         standard retail version of Windows 98. You need an
  162.         installation of DirectX 5/6.

  167. 5.2     Problems with Mainboards
  168.  
  169.         If your mainboard has no Intel chipset it may be necessary
  170.         to install a chipset specific software patch to get best
  171.         support and performance using the AGP port. Normally this
  172.         patch should be delivered on CD with your system or
  173.         mainboard. Otherwise you may get the newest patches on
  174.         the websites of the chipset vendors.

  181.         If you have any questions about full AGP support on non
  182.         Intel mainboards please consult your distributor.

  184. 5.3     Free defineable refreshrates (monitor timings)
  185.  
  186.         It is necessary to install and use the  specified INF -
  187.         file delivered with your monitor. For information about to
  188.         install please look above or use the windows documentation.

  192. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  193.  
  194.  
  195.         This section documents known anomalies or problems and
  196.         gives hints on work arounds.
  197.  
  198.         - If you install the ELSA display driver on a system with
  199.           an previously installed nVIDIA driver, the registry key
  200.           HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
  201.           OpenGLDrivers\RIVATNT will not be updated. Replace
  202.           "nv3ogl.dll" with "ELSAEIIO.DLL" manually.
  203.  
  204.         - Do not use "Custom Direct3D Settings" -names with more
  205.           than twenty characters in the "3D-Settings" property
  206.           tabs. Some failures may occur while using WINMANSuite.
  207.  
  208.         - Task switching while 3D applications are active leads to
  209.           corruption of textures in some cases
  210.  
  211.         - The horizontal frequency of resolution 480x360 works is
  212.           too low for most monitors. Please take a look at 5.3.
  213.  
  214.         - OpenGL screen savers  crash if an additional suspend
  215.           operation is executed by the system or manually.
  216.  
  217.         - Switching VESA modes to windowed mode leads to  a system
  218.           crash.
  219.  
  220.         - For best display quality, in the 'More Direct3D' section
  221.           of 3D Settings Texel Alignment should be set to "upper
  222.           left corner".
  223.  
  224.         - Mouse trails are not displayed.
  225.  
  226.         - In Windows 98 it may happen that the Synergy II does not
  227.           work as a secondary device. Windows has problems to
  228.           initialize properly the BIOS of the graphics board, if
  229.           the size of the BIOS file is larger than 32kB.
  230.           In this case please install the file MMPOWER.INF via
  231.           right mouse button from the folder \SYNERGY2\WIN9X.
