  45. 1.      Overview
  46.  
  47.         This CD contains the ELSA Display Driver for Microsoft Windows
  48.         95/98.
  49.  
  50.         The driver supports 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in
  51.         all resolutions available on used ELSA board.

  75.         sure you have all the files mentioned above!

  80. 3.      Installation
  81.  
  82. 3.1     Installing ELSA graphics board for Windows 95/98
  83.  
  84.         Remove your "old" VGA and put the ELSA graphics board into your
  85.         computer. If your ELSA graphics adapter contains a VGA-switch,
  86.         be sure that it's position is set to the "1" position (VGA
  87.         enabled).
  88.         On startup Windows 95/98 detects the ELSA graphics board as
  89.         "PCI early VGA Device" or a "PCI standard VGA adapter" and
  90.         prompts for a manufacturer disk. Advanced users can now install
  91.         as described in 3.3, Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install.
  92.         If you prefer an easy way to install the driver or the driver is
  93.         downloaded as EXE from the web you should first confirm Windows
  94.         request to install a "PCI Standard VGA adapter". Later you can
  95.         start the EXE or install by CD.
  96.  
  97. 3.1     Installation from CD
  98.  
  99.         During a running Windows 95/98 session insert the CD
  100.         into your CD-ROM. Normally after the CD is read, a setup is
  101.         started and guides through installation. In case 'Auto Insert
  102.         Notification' is disabled in your system, the setup has to be
  103.         started manually by double clicking its icon in the root of CD.
  104.         Now you can choose the components to be installed. After
  105.         rebooting the system your monitor is recognized and installed.
  106.         A resolution and color depth can be chosen now.
  107.  
  108. 3.2     Installing downloaded driver packages
  109.  
  110.         Driver packages from the web are self-extracting EXEs. The files
  111.         are temporary copied to e.g. c:\elsainst directory and an
  112.         automatic driver setup is started. Tools are installed, too.
  113.         After finishing the setup or canceling the procedure the
  114.         extracted installation files are deleted, including the
  115.         temporary created folder.
  116.  
  117. 3.3     Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install
  118.  
  119.         After Windows recognized the ELSA graphics adapter choose
  120.         'Have Disk...'. If you are updating the driver manually, select
  121.         'change...' in the advanced settings of the diplay properties.
  122.         Now browse through the ELSA CD and select the proper display
  123.         driver subdirectory (e.g. GLORIA\SYNERGY\WIN9X\STANDARD).Windows
  124.         will copy the driver files and prompt you to reboot the
  125.         computer. After restarting, Windows is running with the ELSA
  126.         display drivers active. If your ELSA graphics adapter is not the
  127.         primary display adapter in Windows 98, you have to activate the
  128.         hardware by clicking on the connected monitor bitmap in the global
  129.         windows display settings.

  131. 3.4     Installation extension
  132.  
  133.         The drivers installation routine will additionally create the
  134.         "ELSA Settings", "ELSA Driver Settings", "ELSA ColorControl", 
  135.         "ELSA ChipGuard" property pages and installs an OpenGL ICD.
  136.         The drivers setup included in self-extracting driver packages
  137.         or on the CD will install additional tools like "WINman
  138.         Suite", and "ELSAinfo".
  139.  
  140.         In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  141.         without rebooting your system.

  144.         After installing and restaring the system the advanced features
  145.         will be installed and activatd for your system.

  161. 5.      Release notes
  162.  
  163. 5.1     DirectDraw/Direct3D support
  164.  
  165.  
  166.         The display driver do support DirectDraw/Direct3D from
  167.         DirectX7, but to use it in an application, you must install
  168.         DirectDraw/Direct3D. The Microsoft DirectDraw/Direct3D
  169.         components are not included in the standard retail version
  170.         of Windows 9x. You need an installation of DirectX7.
  171.  
  172.         To install DirectDraw/Direct3D use the CDSETUP from your
  173.         CD or start the DXsetup.exe in the folder:
  174.

  177. 5.2     AGP and Windows 95/98
  178.  
  179.  
  180.         AGP is supported only by the Windows version OSR-2.1 or higher.
  181.         This is available after upgrading a Windows 95b (OSR2.0) version
  182.         by the USB-Update 'USBSUPP.EXE'.
  183.         The version number of your installed Windows can be found in
  184.         the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
  185.         Windows\CurrentVersion\Version and VersionNumber.
  186.         The Entries for OSR-2.1 are:
  187.

  189.         Version       "Windows95"
  190.         VersionNumber "4.03.1212" or "4.03.1214"
  191.  
  192.         If your mainboard has no Intel chipset it may be necessary to
  193.         install a chipset specific software patch to get best support
  194.         and performance using the AGP port.
  195.         Normally this patch should be delivered on CD with your system
  196.         or mainboard. Otherwise you may get the newest patches on the
  197.         internetsites of the chipset vendors.

  205.         mainboards please consult your distributor.

  207. 5.3     Free defineable refreshrates (monitor timings)
  208.  
  209.         It is necessary to install and use the specified INF - file
  210.         delivered with your monitor. For information about to install
  211.         please look above or use the windows documentation.

  216. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  217.  
  218.  
  219.         This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  220.         hints on work arounds.
  221.  
  222.         - if there are flashing effects visible while playing 3D games 
  223.           with "3D Stereo" feature enabled, please make sure that the 
  224.           checkbox "poll with interrupts enabled" under:
  225.            
  226.           Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Game Controllers
  227.           -> Advanced 
  228.  
  229.           is enabled. 
  230.  
  231.         - if using the "no wait for vsync" option under "ELSA Driver 
  232.           Settings" "3D Revelator" stereo support won┤t work.    
  233.  
  234.           -if "3D Revelator" is activated the Transform & Lighting
  235.            capability is temporary deactivated.
  236.  
  237.         - if using this graphics board with Windows9x on mainboards with 
  238.           VIA chipsets (MVP3, Apollo, a.s.o.) it is strongly necessary 
  239.           to install the VIA AGP driver patch "VIAGARTD.VXD" version 3.3 
  240.           or newer. You can download this patch at:

  245.  
  246.         - for maximum performance the AntiAliasing checkbox in: Display
  247.           Properties - Settings - Advanced - Driver Settings - More 3D,
  248.           should be set to "Disable"

  250.         - Task switching while 3D applications are active leads to
  251.           corruption of textures in some cases
  252.  
  253.         - OpenGL screen savers oftenly crash if an additional suspend
  254.           is executed by the system or manually.
  255.  
  256.         - Windows suspend during active 3D applications may cause system
  257.           crash in Windows 95
  258.  
  259.         - Mouse trails are not displayed, because the Riva chip
  260.           accelerates this Windows functionality in hardware
  261.  
  262.         - Under Windows 95 there are problems with topical games.
