  49. INSTALLATION
  50. ------------
  51. If you downloaded this file from a BBS, you don't need to run Install.  If you
  52. purchased an evaluation disk from a shareware vendor or the story, follow these
  53. directions.  To install Pickle Wars, place the diskette into the A drive and
  54. type A:, or into the B drive and type B:.  When the A> or B> prompt appears on
  55. the screen, type INSTALL.  Follow the directions to install the software.
  56.  
  57. To begin the game type PW1.
  58.  
  59.  
  60. Note to Windows Users
  61. ---------------------
  62. Pickle Wars will run as a DOS application, spawned under Windows, but you may
  63. encounter sound card conflicts.  The best solution if you run into conflicts
  64. is to completely exit from Windows before starting Pickle Wars.  Clicking on
  65. the DOS prompt is NOT exiting Windows.  You must actually close your Windows
  66. session.
  67.  
  68. Note to OS/2 Users
  69. ------------------
  70. Pickle Wars will run under OS/2, but you'll have to do a little tweaking to
  71. make it run correctly, and at the right speed.  Here's how to do it.
  72.  
  73. Run Pickle Wars in a full-screen DOS session rather than a windowed DOS
  74. session.  In addition, use the following DOS session settings:
  75.  
  76.    DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION OFF
  77.    DOS_UMB ON
  78.    HW_TIMER ON
  79.    IDLE_SECONDS 0
  80.    IDLE_SENSITIVITY 75
  81.    VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IOTRAP OFF
  82.    VIDEO_ONDEMAND_MEMORY ON
  83.    VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION OFF
  84.  
  85. The HW-TIMER and VIDEO_xxx settings are critical to running the game under
  86. OS/2.  Anything else makes the game look hyperactive, with things running
  87. way too fast.  Depending on the speed of your system you may have to
  88. experiment with these settings.
  89.  
  90. Pickle Wars and Sound Blaster 16
  91. --------------------------------
  92. The Sound Blaster 16 sound card causes special problems, especially in 486 DX2
  93. systems.  If the game locks up, try running it without digitized sound effects.
  94. Another option is to include the following command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  95.   
  96.     SET SB-SET FM:9,9
  97.  
  98. This command may also make the music louder if it is too soft on your SB 16.
  99.  
  100. Making a clean boot disk
  101. ------------------------
  102. If you encounter problems running Pickle Wars there may be a conflict between
  103. it and a program resident in memory.  Here's a way to avoid the conflict.
  104.  
  105. Place a blank, unformatted diskette into drive A of your computer.  Then type
  106.  
  107.             FORMAT A:/S/U
  108.  
  109. and press enter.  When the computer is finished formatting the disk and
  110. copying the system files to it, press the RESET button on your computer or the
  111. ALT-CTRL-DEL keys at the same time.  After your computer has rebooted, go to
  112. the Pickle Wars directory and play the game.  If it runs, there is a conflict
  113. between a resident program loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file.
  114. Whenever you want to play Pickle Wars, simply reboot your computer with the
  115. boot disk you have created.
  116.  
  117.  
  118. The Story so far
  119. ----------------
  120. Warlike aliens resembling giant dill pickles have invaded the peaceful human
  121. colony of Arcadia.  After 500 years of peace, the people of Arcadia have put
  122. away their weapons.  Their only military organization is the Coast Guard.
  123. They appear to be helpless against the alien onslaught.
  124.  
  125. Fortunately, an enterprising teenager discovers that the Aliens are deathly
  126. afraid of vegetables (no one knows why --- well, actually WE know why but we
  127. aren't telling you, until all becomes clear in Underneath the Planet of the
  128. Pickles).  So the inhabitants of Arcadia arm themselves with SaladShooters(R)
  129. and do battle with the dread Pickles.
  130.  
  131. You alternately play our hero, Dave, a history student at the University, and
  132. Linda, a Coast Guard officer.  You must accomplish many tasks including
  133. finding Lord Geric's Depository of Ancient Weapons, finding the Ancient
  134. Weapons themselves, finding more SaladShooters(R) and ultimately finding the
  135. Doomsday Machine itself.
  136.  
  137. The following keys allow you to run, climb, jump and use the SaladShooter(R)
  138. to toss sliced cucumbers at the Alien Pickles, which causes them to faint.  
  139.  
  140. Keyboard
  141. --------

  155. You can redefine the keyboard from the "Options" "Keyboard" menu. 
  156.  
  157. Joystick
  158. --------
  159. Button 1...........Jump
  160. Button 2...SaladShooter 
  161.  
  162. To use the Joystick you must first go to the menu and choose 
  163.  
  164.    "Options" 
  165.    "Joystick" 
  166.    "J"
  167.  
  168. If you do NOT have a Joystick and you tell the program to use one, the program
  169. will slow to a crawl. If this happens go back into the Joystick menu and answer
  170. "No". 
  171.  
  172. Collect SaladShooters to help you toss vegetables at the Aliens.  Aliens faint
  173. at the touch of vegetables!  Your job is to collect all the Salad-Shooters so
  174. that you and your fellow Arcadians can fight off the alien invasion. 
  175.  
  176.  
  177. Use your SaladShooters to break the spheres blocking your way.  Ok, Ok... we
  178. know that cucumbers don't explode but we like explosions.  So Arcadian 
  179. cucumbers have been genetically altered to explode on nonliving objects. 
  180.  
  181. Press the SPACE BAR, ALT key or Joystick button to activate your SaladShooter.
  182.  
  183. When you see a red button, press the <ENTER> key to activate the moving
  184. platform.  Switches are on when they blink red.
  185.  
  186. Collect carrots for health.  Remember to eat lots of vegetables to resist the
  187. Pickle Invaders!
  188.  
  189. Don't let the Pickles near you!  They will take away your health points!
  190.  
  191. Warps
  192. -----
  193. Press the Enter key to activate the red switches or the Warps.  Warps look
  194. like doorways.  Switches are rectangular and blink when activated.
  195.  
  196. If you have trouble getting a warp or a switch to activate when you press the
  197. <ENTER> key, try holding the <ENTER> key down as you walk back and forth in
  198. front of the door or switch.
  199.  
  200. Save/Restore
  201. ------------
  202. Press Esc to bring up the main menu.  Then choose "Game Options" to see Save
  203. and Restore.  The program automatically saves the games when you quit and you
  204. can restore "last game played". 
  205.  
  206. Mail
  207. ----
  208. You will see pieces of paper fluttering in the breeze.  This is your mail and
  209. you can read it by touching the paper. 
  210.  
  211. Do not accidentally shoot your mail! 
  212.  
  213. Mail machines deliver your mail. Do not accidentally shoot them or you will
  214. lose points and miss your messages. 
  215.  
  216. There is only a limited amount of mail that you get on each level.
  217.  
  218. Beware, though, the Aliens have flying machines about the same size as the
  219. mail machines.  Don't let the Alien machines touch you!
  220.  
  221. Difficulty Levels
  222. -----------------
  223. On Easy level the aliens are not very good at chasing you and when they faint,
  224. they stay out cold until the end of the level.
  225.  
  226. On Medium level the aliens are a little smarter at chasing you and wake up
  227. after the faint.
  228.  
  229. On Hard level the aliens are very smart and wake up quickly after they faint.
  230.  
  231. You can change difficulties at any time by pressing ESC to bring up the menu
  232. and then choosing "Game Options", "Difficulty".
  233.  
  234.  
  235. Sound and Music
  236. ---------------
  237. Press 'S' to activate the sound menu.  Your soundcard information, joystick
  238. setting, and special keyboard definition are all saved in a file called
  239. CONFIG.PW1.  If you have a soundcard installed and tell the program to turn off 
  240. music, the music will play next time you restart the program.  The 
  241. configuration file only saves information on the type of card you have.
  242.  
  243. You can delete CONFIG.PW1 if you want Pickle Wars to allow you to change your
  244. soundcard settings or you can choose "Reconfigure Soundcard" off the 'S' menu
  245. or you can answer 'Y' when the program asks you whether you want to change
  246. soundcards at startup. 
  247.  
  248. If you choose a soundcard that you do not have installed, the program will
  249. hang your computer!
  250.  
  251. If you have chosen an incorrect soundcard you can run PWSETUP to change it or 
  252. delete CONFIG.PW1. 
  253.  
  254. Hints
  255. -----
  256. You can skip the opening cinematic sequence (or any other cinematic sequence)
  257. by pressing <ESC> a couple of times.
  258.  
  259. Hold the ENTER key down as you walk back and forth in front of switches or
  260. doorways to make it easier to activate switches and warps.
  261.  
  262. TROUBLE SHOOTING
  263. ----------------
  264. > Game hangs or acts weird.
  265.  
  266. Delete CONFIG.PW*.  Next time you start the game tell it you do NOT have any
  267. type of soundcard at all.  If it runs OK, you have a soundcard conflict.  
  268.  
  269. The most likely explanation is that you have told the program that you have a
  270. soundcard that doesn't match the one in your computer.
  271.  
  272. If you are sure you have told the program the correct soundcard then you may
  273. be having a conflict with some TSR.  See the instructions for booting from a
  274. special bare-bones boot disk.
  275.  
  276. > Game runs slowly.
  277.  
  278. You may have Joystick set to "Yes" without a joystick connected.  Go into the
  279. Game Options and choose Joystick and answer "No".
  280.  
  281. Since this is a true 256 color dual-parallaxing game, it just runs slowly on
  282. a 286.  Try answering Y to the question about soundcards during startup and
  283. tell the program you don't have any soundcards.  The music and digitized
  284. sound effects do slow the game down. 
  285.  
  286. Try pressing the grey '+' key. it speeds up the frame rate.  The '-' key slows
  287. it down. 
  288.  
  289.   
  290. > Music is messed up or too soft.
  291.   
  292. You may be running from Windows which sometimes messes up soundcards.  Read
  293. your Soundcard documentation to find out how to fix this since there are
  294. usually settings that will fix it. 
  295.  
  296. You may have one of the SoundBlaster cards that plays music too softly with
  297. our drivers.   Unfortunately, that is something that is intrinsic to Midpak
  298. and one of the SoundBlaster cards.
  299.  
  300. Check the volume adjustment on your card.
  301.  
  302. > Joystick only goes in one direction or pegs over. 
  303.  
  304. Try choosing Game Options, Joystick and be sure to center the joystick before
  305. pressing 'J'.
  306.  
  307. Some joysticks need to be calibrated.  Read your joystick manual to find out
  308. how to do this. 
  309.  
  310. If all else fails, turn the Joystick option to NO and use the keyboard. 
  311.  
  312. > Insufficient Memory message.
  313.  
  314. This message means what it says.  You may have limited memory because you are
  315. running from Windows or have a large shell program loaded.  Try making a
  316. "bare-bones" boot disk and running the program.
  317.  
  318. > Missing File.
  319.  
  320. You are missing one of the PW*.* files.  Either it was accidentally deleted or
  321. never installed.  The most common cause of this is if you have run out of room
  322. on your hard disk.  Type DIR and look at how many bytes free there are.  If
  323. there are fewer than about 1,000,000 bytes, lack of disk space is the problem.
  324.  
  325. NOTES ON YOUR PROGRAM FILES
  326. ---------------------------
  327. (Do not read this unless you are a sophisticated user)
  328.  
  329. All files that start with PW*.* are necessary.  Don't ever delete any of them.
  330.  
  331. Files that end in *.PW? can be deleted if you want.  They are: 
  332.  
  333.    high.pw?.....high scores
  334.    config.pw?...music/sound/joystick information
  335.    save*.pw?....save files
  336.  
  337. Those zillions of *.com, *.adv and *.ad files are part of Midpak which runs
  338. your soundcard. If you don't have a soundcard you can delete them if you want.
  339. f you do have a soundcard, you can delete the ones that don't apply to you.
  340. Do NOT delete: 
  341.  
  342.    PMIDPAK.COM
  343.    MIDPAK.*
  344.    SOUNDRV.COM
  345.    Your specific *.AD, *.ADV and *.COM files.
  346.  
  347.  
  348. The above files are necessary for any soundcard.
  349.  
  350. If your card is not listed, ask your card manufacturer if they have a Midpak
  351. file for it.  If so, just copy it to the Pickle Wars directory and it SHOULD
  352. work if it is for the correct Midpak version which is NOT the protected mode
  353. one.
