THE PC-Lock HARD DISK PROTECTION SYSTEM
Version 1.1
(c) Copyright 1986 by
Johnson Computer Systems
20 Dinwiddie Place
Newport News, VA 23602
WHAT PC-Lock DOES
After you install PC-Lock you will be asked to enter your password
each time you boot your computer from your hard disk. Just type
your password and press return. The boot process will continue
normally. If you make an error, just re-type it correctly and
press return. When you boot from a diskette the system will boot
normally, but you will not be able to access your hard disk.
At any time while you are you are using your computer, after it has
finished booting, you may press the shift key on the left side of
your keyboard 3 times in succession. This will cause the screen to
become completely blank. The computer will continue with the task
it was performing, but will "throw away" any characters typed at
the keyboard (including Ctrl-Alt-Del) until you enter your password
as described above. The screen and keyboard will then return to
normal.
It's just that simple, yet it will provide a significant level of
protection for your system both when it is booted, and while you
are away having a nice lunch. PC-Lock is a software solution to a
security problem and is probably somewhat more secure than the lock
on your front door. A sufficiently knowledgeable and determined
individual will be able to circumvent the system, as indeed any
software security system can be circumvented. The level of protec-
tion is, however, sufficient for most purposes. (PC-Lock files are
encoded, and will not decode themselves if someone is using a
debugger to find out how they work.)
ENHANCEMENTS IN VERSION 1.1
The UNLOCK utility described below was added to allow access to your
hard disk after you boot from a floppy. You must know your password
to use this utility.
Changes were made to allow PC-LOCK to work properly with all Western
Digital hard disk controllers. Some Western Digital controllers
contain a bug which caused PC-LOCK 1.0 to fail.
SYSTEMS ON WHICH PC-Lock MAY BE USED
PC-Lock is intended for use on any IBM compatible computer having a
hard disk which was originally set up using the DOS FDISK utility.
This includes almost all hard disk systems which allow you to boot
directly from the hard disk without using a floppy diskette.

ware system which is marketed in a manner uniquely suited to

this program with whomever you wish. Complete means that all six
files described below are shared as a package.
Commercial users are licensed to use PC-Lock on any number of
computers for evaluation purposes. If you wish to continue using
PC-Lock after a reasonable evaluation period (10 days suggested)
you may do so by registering your copy of PC-Lock with Johnson Com-
puter Systems and paying a one time fee. Registration will auto-
matically give you a permanent license for the use of PC-Lock on a
specific number of systems, a free copy of the next version of
PC-Lock, and automatic notification of any additional enhancements
and updates. The registration fee is:
Number of Computers Fee per Computer
1 - 5 $17.50
7 - 15 $15.00
16 - 99 $12.50
100 - Up $10.00
The number of computers is the maximum number on which PC-Lock will
be installed at any one time. If you wish to receive one or more
copies of PC-Lock directly from Johnson Computer Systems please add
$4.00 per diskette desired. If you are located in Virginia, please
add 4% state sales tax.
Non-commerical users are encouraged (though not required) to
register their copy at the $17.50 rate if they find the program of
sufficient value to continue using it.
Please use a copy of the registration form at the end of this docu-
ment. Please do it right away as procrastination is my worst enemy.
Thank you for your support.

DISCLAIMER
PC-Lock is sold on an "as-is" basis without warranty of any kind.
It is up to you to determine if PC-Lock is suitable for your pur-
poses. We have carefully designed and tested PC-Lock and neither
we nor our beta testers have found any errors in the program. We
cannot, however, be sure that there are none, nor can we ensure
that the system on which you install it will be error free. We do
not know of any commercial software which is incompatible with
PC-Lock, but we cannot be sure that none exists. Therefore, having
made this disclosure, the entire risk of using PC-Lock is yours.
You are not licensed to use PC-Lock if you do not fully accept
these conditions.
YOUR PC-Lock FILES
Now that all of the commercials are over, we can describe PC-Lock
in more detail. The PC-Lock lock system consists of the following
files:
INSTALL.COM - Installs PC-Lock on your computer.
Verifies that PC-Lock can be correctly installed on
your computer, places a new line in your CONFIG.SYS
file, and places a new device driver file in the
root directory of the hard disk from which your
system is booted.
PASSWORD.COM - A utility which allows you to change your password.
DESTALL.COM - A utility which removes PC-Lock from your system.
HIDE.COM - A utility to hide your CONFIG.SYS and PC-Lock
device driver files so causal observers will not see
them. (They won't by listed by a DIR command, etc.)
HIDE may also be used to hide any other files.
UNHIDE.COM - A utility to make hidden files visible.
UNLOCK.COM - A utility to suspend PC-Lock protection.
PC-LOCK.DOC - This file.

HOW TO INSTALL PC-Lock ON YOUR COMPUTER
You need to have a floppy diskette which contains your PC-Lock
files. Do not place a write protect tab on the diskette at this
time.
Place your PC-Lock diskette in drive A: and enter:
A:INSTALL
After the installation procedure completes automatically, make a
second copy of the diskette in drive A: and place write protect
tabs on both of them. These diskettes now contain information
unique to your specific computer and will be required should you
ever desire to remove PC-Lock from your system. Place these dis-
kettes in a secure place so that you (and only you) can remove
PC-Lock.
Your password is PASSWORD. You may change it at any time by
placing a copy of your PC-Lock diskette in drive A: and entering:
A:PASSWORD
and following the directions on the screen. The PASSWORD utility may
reside on any disk(ette) but we recommend that you do not place it on
your hard disk for security reasons.
A COUPLE OF CAUTIONS
Do not install a program which "takes over the keyboard" such as
Prokey, Superkey, Sidekick, etc. while you have the keyboard locked
as described above. Such programs may be installed at any other
time.
Do not lock your keyboard while a debugger, such as DEBUG.COM, is
running.

HOW TO USE THE OTHER UTILITIES
DESTALL
If you wish to remove PC-Lock from your computer, place your
installation diskette in drive A: and enter: A:DESTALL
HIDE
Place your PC-Lock diskette in drive A:. If you wish to hide the
PC-Lock device driver file and the CONFIG.SYS file, just enter
A:HIDE
If you wish to hide other files enter: A:HIDE filespec replacing
"filespec" with the drive, path, and file name. If the drive is not
specified, the current logged drive will be used. If the path is
not specified, the current directory will be used. The file name
may contain wild cards. The HIDE utility may reside on any disk.
UNHIDE
This utility reverses the action of HIDE, and is used in exactly
the same way.
UNLOCK
This utility allows you to access your hard disk after you boot
from a floppy disk, but you must still know your password. Just
enter A:UNLOCK. You will be asked for your password. After you
enter it correctly, you will be informed that PC-Lock protection
has been suspended. Re-boot your system from a floppy and you
will be able to access your hard disk. PC-Lock protection will
automatically be reinstated the next time you boot your system
your hard disk.
