Welcome to PC STORYBOOKS! I hope your child enjoys this library of stories
as much as my two-year-old son, Michael does. If so, please send a $5.00
registration fee per storybook along with the name of the storybook to:
Rebecca Thomas
P.O. Box 810
Sturbridge, MA 01566
Please feel free to include any comments and suggestions.
This is my first attempt to create shareware for the pre-schooler. I am an
ex-programmer at home with two children. I am having a great time writing
software for my sons and hope to continue releasing more stories into
the shareware market. My goal is to create software which will
introduce very young children to the world of computers in a manner which is
both fun and slightly educational. How successful I am at reaching this goal
depends on you.
PC STORYBOOKS are very easy to use. My two-year-old can easily flip
the pages of the "books" by pressing the spacebar (all other keys are "dead").
When compared to other "books" you might find in a bookstore, PC STORYBOOKS
offer several advantages: (1) a chance to use the computer (kids love that),
(2) a bit of animation and music (not found in paper books), and
(3) "pages" that cannot rip or be chewed. When compared to similar paper
books, I hope that you will find the $5.00 registration fee (per story) to be
very modest. In addition, registered owners will receive information on other
"PC Storybooks" as it becomes available (some stories will be shareware;
others will not). Registered owners will also receive free updates.
INSTALLING PC STORYBOOKS:
Operating Requirements:
-- IBM PC or compatible
-- CGA
-- MS DOS 2.1 or greater
-- at least 256K
-- Hard Disk Drive (highly recommended, not required -- see below)
To install PC STORYBOOKS on a Hard Disk Drive:
(1) Create a directory on your hard disk drive called STORIES.
Example: C: MD STORIES
(2) Set current directory to STORIES.
Example: C: CD STORIES
(3) Copy all files from disk containing PC STORYBOOKS MENU and LET'S BUILD
A SNOWMAN to hard disk drive.
Example: C: COPY A:*.*
(4) Copy all files from all other story diskettes to hard disk drive.
Example: C: COPY A:*.*
To install PC STORYBOOKS on Floppy Disk Drive system:
(1) LET'S BUILD A SNOWMAN will run as is on a floppy drive system. Refer
to instructions below to begin story.
(2) All other stories will have to be prepared before running. To prepare
each story for use, copy the following files from the disk containing
PC STORYBOOKS MENU and LET'S BUILD A SNOWMAN to the desired story
diskette:
BRUN45.EXE
MENU1.FIL
STORIES.EXE
STORIES1.PIC
STORIES2.PIC
STORIES3.PIC
To begin PC STORYBOOKS, set the prompt to the disk drive where the
software resides and type STORIES. Press the return/enter key and the
menu will appear. Move the highlight bar to the title of the story you
wish to "read" and select the story by pressing the return/enter key.
The story will begin. From that point on, the only key that works is the
spacebar. Use it to turn the "pages" of the book. Note the appearance
of the "+" in the upper right hand corner of each "page." When the "+"
can be seen on the screen, all keys are "dead." This feature prohibits
your child from holding down the spacebar key (as children often do) and
thereby having the entire story fly by without being read. When the "+"
disappears the spacebar once again becomes an "active" key.
(NOTE: If you are using a floppy disk drive, you will only be able to
"read" the story residing on the diskette currently in the disk drive.
Hard disk drive users will be able to "read" all stories installed on
the hard drive).
MY SONS, MICHAEL, CRAIG AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEIR BOOKS!
