Dear friend,
Well, release 8.0 of PCOPY has been a long time in the making. Over
300 hours of my time was consumed in converting PCOPY from the old
Lattice compiler I used to TURBOC version 2.
A major benefit expected from this conversion is better debugging
and support since the new compiler has a source level debugger.
Hopefully this will speed new enhancements along to you.
Version 8.0 also has the long asked for feature of splitting files
to multiple disks. This will allow PCOPY to be used to copy large
files across multiple diskettes.
Another exciting feature is the directory sychronization feature.
It was asked for most by those of you using PCOPY to backup hard
disks to hard disk and large capacity removable disk devices. This
cleans unneeded files from the backup disk.
Unfortunately, I feel I have had to leave some functions of PCOPY
as bonus functions for registered users. I have wanted to remove
this encouragement to registration, but my research shows that a large
number of users indicated they register to get bonus features.
As other Shareware utility authors have found, utility programs get
the least amount of Shareware dollars, just ahead of game programs.
For your interest, I receive about 9 utility registrations each week.
I spend on the average of 15 hours a week on the utilities.
Many of you loyal PCOPY users have requested changes to PCOPY
that are still not implemented. I thank you for your patience and
assure you that your requests are still being considered for future
releases. I try to implement features that will benefit the most
users.
It is one of my goals to always make software professional and useful
to users, and to always make my programs worth more than I ask for them.
I do appreciate you as a user and thank you for using PCOPY. If you
ever have any question, please do not hesitate to ask. I try to answer
all mail I receive. Again, thank you for using my utilities and for
keeping the Shareware concept alive.
Sincerely,
Norm Patriquin
P.S. This is an addendum for release 8.1. It appears that a user
reported almost formatting his hard disk with PCOPY's new
format option. Since I do not want to cause harm to anyones
system, I have completely removed this feature from release
8.1. It will be reimplemented as soon as I can make sure it
cannot cause harm to a system.
