  1.    Within this preprints directory, papers are organized by subject
  2.    area.  You will find here directories named "Epistemology",
  3.    "Metaphysics" and so on.
  4.  
  5.    Within each, you will find directories with names like
  6.    "Jane_Jones.Frege".  In this directory you would find a
  7.    paper by Jane Jones, with short title "Frege".
  8.  
  9.    Each paper stored here consists of two or more files.
  10.  
  11.    First, there will be a file ending in ".abs", containing an
  12.    abstract of the paper, in a form that can be viewed online
  13.    (for most users, a command like "get frege.abs |more" will
  14.    display it).

  16.    Then there will be one or more files containing the text of
  17.    the paper, in various formats:

  19.        Filename ending     Format
  20.        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~     ~~~~~~
  21.        .txt                plain ASCII text.  If you don't know what the others
  22.                           are, get this one!
  23.        .ps                Postscript
  24.        .wp                WordPerfect
  25.        .msd             Microsoft Word for DOS
  26.        .msm             Microsoft Word for Macintosh
  27.        .msw                Microsoft Word for Windows
  28.        .tex                TeX or LaTeX
  29.        .dvi             TeX DVI
  30.        .rtf             Microsoft RTF
  31.        .sgm                SGML/TEI
  32.        .tr              Troff
  33.        .hqx             Macintosh Binhex
  34.  
  35.    There may also be one or more files with names ending in ".cmt",
  36.    containing comments on the paper by people other than the author.
  37.    These will be in plain ASCII text format.
