- What's New In VIRx Version 2.96
- ===============================
-
- Date: 4/30/95
-
- 1. There has been a net increase of over 100 virus detectors in version
- 2.96, bringing the total to 2303 detectors. These include detection of
- OneHalf and Nostardamus (in memory), Sampo boot virus and 2Up.
-
- 2. New disinfectors have been added for Boot-437, Stonehenge and others.
-
- 3. Virus names are now stored in a disk file rather than in memory.
- This reduces the memory usage of the product, despite the addition of
- detection and disinfection for many new viruses.
-
- 4. The Install.exe program has had some modifications made to the way it
- handles product registration, for the convenience of our registered users.

- VIRx Version 2.95 Revisions
- ===========================
-
- Date: 1/30/95
-
- 1. There has been a net increase of almost 200 virus detectors in version
- 2.95, bringing the total to 2196 detectors. Significant new detectors
- include Natas, HappyBox and AntiCMOS in boot sectors and memory, along
- with the virus distributed via the Internet called KAOS4 and the new
- polymorphic virus, Pinworm. Many additional viruses in the Preditor and
- other families are detectable now via wildcard search patterns that may
- well detect new variants when they appear.
-
- 2. A problem with changing floppies on some systems during or after a
- scan by VPCScan has been corrected, so there will be no more "Invalid
- Disk Change" errors associated with the use of our products.
-
- 3. In order to more thoroughly do our part to prevent the detection of
- our virus signature patterns in memory, and to avoid the resulting
- confusion that can arise between different antivirus products and testing
- methodologies, we have implemented a system for signature scanning that
- keeps all our fixed virus detection signatures permanently encrypted, they
- are no longer decrypted at all, even during the scanning process.
-
- 4. A re-write of our special scanners for polymorphic viruses was done in
- order to speed up these scanners significantly. As the number and
- complexity of polymorphic viruses continues to rise, this re-write will
- provide ever more significant protection from loss of performance.
- Already, memory scanning speed has been improved by greater than 30% !
-
- 5. A small problem reported regarding the Novell login process was
- corrected through an enhancment to the VIREX.COM TSR module.
-
- 6. Our technical support group has relocated to our home office in
- Massachusetts. Our registered users may now contact us for technical

-
- VIRx Version 2.94 Revisions
- ===========================
-
- Date: 7/7/94
-
- 1. There has been a net increase of about 100 virus detectors in version
- 2.94, bringing the total to 2001 detectors. Significant new detectors
- include Junkie, CHiLLTouch and StealthBoot Family - each of which can also
- be removed with virus-specific removal in this version. The SMEG-encrypted
- Pathogen and Queeg viruses are detectable if they are resident in memory.
-
- 2. The multiple Phalcon/Skism-encrypted virus wildcards were replaced with
- a single algorithm that detects all of these, including ones missed before,
- with much lower chance of false positives.
-
- 3. Our support for non-Novell networks has been improved, and includes
- NFS-mounted remote volumes via TCP/IP. We want to help make the burgeoning
- Electronic Superhighway safer to travel.
-
- 4. The tiny VIREX.COM resident full-time protection was enhanced further
- to support complete seamless functionality under extremely low-memory
- conditions, again with no additional memory overhead (still only 528 bytes).
-
- 5. In addition to the virus-specific detectors for Junkie, StealthBoot and
- CHiLLTouch viruses, Virex for the PC can now also remove infections from
- Charley, FrenchBoot, Kampana and Barrotes.1310.
-
- 6. A mis-identification of 3-Tunes virus as Helloween has been corrected.
-
- 7. It is now possible for Virex for the PC to remove MBR viruses from a
- second physical hard drive.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- VIRx Version 2.93 Revisions
- ===========================
-
- Date: 2/22/94
-
- 1. There has been a net increase of 246 virus detectors in version 2.93,
- bringing the total to 1966 detectors.
-
- 2. VPCScan can now detect Tremor virus. Unlike other leading anti-virus
- products, our detection algorithm for Tremor is 100% reliable.
-
- 3. The VPCScan fixed-signature scanning has been rewritten to make optimal
- use of available memory while minimizing impact of low-memory situations on
- scanning speed. The result includes the ability to install cleanly under
- DoubleSpaced DOS 6.2 and Windows DOS boxes. Also, scanning efficiency
- under all memory conditions has improved.
-
- 4. Virus specific disinfection has been added for a variety of common
- viruses that our users might actually run across in the field. These
- include Stoned.Empire.Monkey.B, Ripper, Azusa, AntiEXE and Stoned.LZR.
-
- 5. Possible "false positives" for the Nuke Encryption Device are
- eliminated. Our thanks to Accolade, Inc. for their assistance with this
- problem.
-
- 6. False positives by other scanners on VPCScan should be reduced due to
- better encryption of our wild-card signatures.
-
- 7. A problem with Virex.com working correctly with older versions of
- Professional Write and the Norton Utilities has been corrected. Virex.com
- remains the single smallest continuous virus protection with both known and
- unknown virus detection, using only 528 bytes of memory. Perfect for use
- with systems burdened with large network drivers.
-
- 8. Datawatch now provides interactive technical support for Virex for the
- PC through our forum on America OnLine, keyword DATAWATCH, or by calling
- our technical support specialists at (919) 549-0711. We can also be reached
- via Internet email at MacTech@datawatch.com. Technical support is available
- to registered users only. Please register by calling us at the phone number
- listed above. Credit card orders are accepted.

- VIRx Version 2.91 Revisions
- ===========================
-
- Date: 10/01/93
-
- 1. There has been a net increase of 196 virus detectors in version 2.91,
- bringing the total to 1720 detectors.
-
- 2. VPCScan can now detect viruses such as Satin_Bug and FruitFly, that
- use their form of multi-level encryption.
-
- 3. VPCScan will now make use of an existing INOC file to do generic file
- repair now FIRST, and by default, before attempting a virus-specific repair.
-
- 4. The VIREX.COM resident integrity monitor and known virus detector has
- been re-written. The result is even smaller (528 bytes resident !),
- significantly faster, more interactive when a problem is found and much
- less noticable when all is well. If you have previously avoided resident
- security monitors because of their inconvenience or performance penalties,
- you should give this VIREX.COM a try.
-
- 5. A new menu-driven Install program is included in this version, replacing
- the batch installer provided in previous releases.
-
- 6. This version of VPCScan will detect viruses encrypted with "NED", yet
- another encryption device being distributed via virus exchange BBS's.
-
- 7. The product has new disinfectors specific for the "Green Catepillar"
- and the "Butterflies" families of viruses.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- VIRx Version 2.9 Revisions
- ==========================
-
- Date: 07/07/93
-
- 1. There has been a net increase of 105 virus detectors in version 2.9,
- bringing the total to 1524 detectors.
-
- 2. VPCScan can now detect viruses, such as Civil War II and Girafe and
- any others as they are produced, encrypted with the so-called "Trident
- Polymorphic Engine".
-
- 3. New disinfectors were added for over 40 boot sector viruses, so that
- Virex users can conveniently remove these viruses from their drives without
- having to use FDisk or SYS or our generic repair via the CRITICAL.VRX file.
- The new disinfectors include ones for FORM, FLIP, most STONED varients and
- the Parity Boot versions so common recently in the Netherlands.
-
- 4. Our detectors for the XBoot (TrackSwap) and Print Screen Boot viruses
- had to be altered to avoid detecting the unencrypted virus code pieces
- Central Point's VSafe/Bootsafe places in system memory. There may be
- additional false positives due this practice if it is continued in future
- releases of VSafe/Bootsafe. We have not yet figured out a way to test
- against currently unreleased versions of these products !
-
- 5. Please send virus samples or other suspicious files either to our BBS
- at (919) 419-1602 or to our corporate offices at:
-
- Datawatch Corporation
- 3700 Lyckan Pkway
- Durham, NC 27707
- USA
-
- Comments and suggestions are always welcome as well.

-
- VIRx Version 2.8 Revisions
- ==========================
- Date: 05/17/93
-
- 1. There has been a net increase of 46 virus detectors in version 2.8,
- bringing the total to 1419 detectors.
-
- 2. In preparation for this version all available boot sector virus
- samples were re-analyzed, with the intent of making VIREX for the PC's
- detection of this type of virus more comprehensive and accurate.
- In the process, the names of the viruses were changed to match the
- standard names as recommended by the University of Hamburg's Virus
- Testing Center.
-
- 3. We altered VPCScan to make it NOT detect the un-encrypted virus
- signatures that the Vsafe.com program, distributed by Microsoft Corp.
- in MS-DOS 6.0, places into memory in most Vsafe load configurations.
- If you experience difficulties with reports of viruses being found in
- memory, please consider using Virex.com INSTEAD of Vsafe. Virex.com
- does not leave virus signatures in memory, and so is compatible with
- anti-virus products from other vendors.
-
- 4. VPCScan will now alert your Novell network console if, while logged
- into the network, a user detects a virus during a scan. If the version
- of Novell Netware is less than 3.x, an appropriate entry is also written
- to the SYS:SYSTEM\NET$LOG.MSG system log file. This feature can be
- turned off with the new "-!N" command line option. (VPCSCAN -!N)

-
- VIRx Version 2.7 Revisions
- ==========================
- Date: 03/29/93
-
- 1. MANY new features and a change from freeware. Read the VIREXPC.DOC
- file for the full details after perusing the summary below.
-
- 2. This release of the archive contains the full VPCScan virus detection
- and repair utility included in our commercial product, Virex for the PC.
- This replaces the freeware scanner VIRx. It detects an additional 75 new
- viruses, bringing the total to 1373 signatures.
- More significantly, through careful use of the generic integrity
- checking features of VPCScan, never available with VIRx, you can detect
- viruses previously unknown through the recognition of unexpected changes
- in your registered executables.
-
- 3. Another popular program from our commercial package is included in
- this archive - VIREX.COM. This tiny resident utility monitors the loading
- and execution of everything you run from the DOS command line, and also
- from within a Windows DOS session, and alerts you to any changes in your
- executables before letting the program run. Unregistered programs or
- altered programs are also scanned for known viruses. All this is done
- so quickly that on a 386SX16 or faster system you will find it difficult
- to tell whether VIREX.COM is loaded or not, unless you attempt to run an
- infected program. You may be amazed to find that VIREX.COM is ONLY USING
- 704 bytes, total. Worth a try !
-
- 4. If you follow the directions in VIREXPC.DOC on using the generic
- Inoculation features of VPCScan, you will be able to repair virus
- infections and/or damage to your programs, Master Boot Record, Partition
- Boot Record(s), and CMOS settings. Note that if the damage done to a
- program file was so extensive that VPCScan cannot generically repair it
- from the Inoculation record, VPCScan will notify you rather than to
- return a damaged version.
- Certain specific common viruses can also be repaired even if no
- Inoculation record is found for the infected file.
-
- 5. This package is no longer free, but is instead a fully functional
- evaluation copy. You will notice that it beeps at you and alerts you to
- its unregistered status if it cannot find a valid registration key on your
- system. At the end of a VPCScan run, you will be shown a list of vendors
- from any of whom you can order Virex for the PC. We recommend that you
- purchase directly from one of our retail distributors and send in your
- registration card to us. You may also purchase from Datawatch at the
- suggested list price of $49.95.
- Organizations with 25 or more computers should contact us directly
- for attractively priced and professionally handled site-licenses.
- BBS sysops should contact us to obtain a complimentary Sysop Key.
-
- 6. The log-file handling has been re-written to allow the logging of
- extremely large numbers of viruses.
-
- 7. The whole program set has been re-written to make it faster and more
- efficient.
