  4. This Quick Start information sheet will help you understand PMTools and get
  5. you started using PMTools. For more detailed information, see the PMTools
  6. User's Guide.

  8. ABOUT PMTOOLS
  9. -------------
  10.  
  11. PMTools is an extension to PC PageMaker 4.0 for Windows that provides a
  12. "ribbon" of buttons that can be used to execute the most common PageMaker
  13. commands. PMTools lets you "mouse around" with your feet up. PMTools is
  14. easy to use, saves lots of time, and it's FUN!

  16. PMTOOLS FEATURES

  19. TEXT AND POINTER RIBBONS
  20.  
  21. PMTools displays a ribbon of buttons down the left side of the screen. The
  22. text ribbon is displayed when the PageMaker text tool is selected or when
  23. in the PageMaker story editor. Otherwise, the pointer ribbon is displayed.

  25. QUOTE CONVERSION
  26.  
  27. If quote conversion is turned on, PMTools converts single and double
  28. apostrophes typed at the keyboard into single and double right
  29. typographical quotes. If the control key is held down, the left single or
  30. double typographical quote is generated.

  32. SHOWFONT
  33.  
  34. ShowFont displays the complete Windows character set in any screen font
  35. that you have installed. Double clicking on a character types that
  36. character into PageMaker at the insertion point. This is great for dingbats
  37. and foreign characters!

  39. INSTALLING PMTOOLS

  42. COPYING THE FILES TO YOUR HARD DISK
  43.  
  44. Copy all of the PMTools files to your WINDOWS directory. Before copying the
  45. files, check that files with the same name do not already exist in the
  46. WINDOWS directory. For example:
  47.      COPY A:*.* C:\WINDOWS.
  48.  
  49. FILES INCLUDED WITH PMTOOLS
  50.  
  51. PMTOOLS.TXT    This file. Brief documentation and installation
  52.                instructions. Read this first!
  53.  
  54. PMTOOLS.EXE    The main PMTools program.
  55. SHOWFONT.EXE   The ShowFont program.
  56.  
  57. VBRUN100.DLL   Required by SHOWFONT.EXE. This is the Visual Basic runtime
  58.                library.
  59.  
  60. ADDING PMTOOLS TO WINDOWS PROGRAM MANAGER
  61.  
  62. Create a program item for PMTools in the same program group that contains
  63. PageMaker. To do this perform the following steps:
  64.  
  65. *    Make sure the Program Manager program group containing PageMaker is
  66.      open.
  67.  
  68. *    Select File/New/New Program Item from Program Manager's menu and hit
  69.      OK.
  70.  
  71. *    Under Description enter PageMaker and under Command Line enter:
  72.           PMTOOLS.EXE.
  73.  
  74.      If the PageMaker program PM4.EXE is not in your PATH, the Command Line
  75.      should be (for example):
  76.           PMTOOLS.EXE C:\PM4\PM4.EXE.

  78. *    Hit the OK button and you should see the new PMTools/PageMaker icon.

  80. USING PMTOOLS
  81. -------------
  82. STARTING PMTOOLS AND PAGEMAKER
  83.  
  84. Double click the new PMTools/PageMaker icon to start PMTools and PageMaker.
  85. Select File/New/OK and notice that the PMTools window disappears.

  87. THE PMTOOLS MENU
  88.  
  89. Under PageMaker's Window menu is a PMTools... entry that can be used to
  90. configure PMTools.
  91.  
  92. LEFT AND RIGHT MOUSE BUTTONS
  93.  
  94. All PMTools buttons treat the left and right mouse buttons the same with
  95. the exception of:
  96.  
  97. *    Super/Subscript: Left button is superscript, right button is
  98.      subscript.
  99. *    Larger/Smaller and Much Larger/Smaller: Left button is larger, right
  100.      button is smaller.
  101. *    Fine Kern and Coarse Kern: Left button kerns apart, right button kerns
  102.      together, both buttons removes kerning.
  103. *    Double and Single Quote: Left button is left quote, right button is
  104.      right quote.
