  28. Introduction
  29. Orator V1.12 is  a new Qwk mail packet reader for Windows
  30. V3.x. This programming project is the first undertaken by myself
  31. both in the PC market and in Visual Basic (The language the 
  32. system was written in). 1.12 is the 3rd non-beta version released 
  33. this year.
  34.  
  35. I hope that you find it as much fun to use as I found to
  36. write. Compared to the work that I have been doing before
  37. this really was an interesting program to write. If you
  38. find Orator to be useful then please be honest and
  39. register this copy. There is an order form included with
  40. this Archive. See Registration below.

  55.      Orator detects Reply-To: fields and From:fields when

  58.      NDX files are no longer needed as opposed to older versions 
  59.      so reconfigure you mail door settings if it currently includes 
  60.      NDX files.

  62.      Personal Mail is shown under a separate group.

  64.      New to 1.12 is the introduction of a folders system. This allows
  65.      you to open your own folders with their titles and archive 
  66.      messages to them. You can then:
  67.     
  68.     a)      View them and cut them to the clipboard so that you can
  69.         include them in replies and other applications.
  70.  
  71.     b)      Print them out.
  72.  
  73.     c)      Move them between folders if you decide to reorganise them.

  75.     d)      and of course delete them.

  80. The unregistered version of Orator V1.12 is fully
  81. functional apart from taglines. If Orator is not
  82. registered then the following appears at the bottom of
  83. all your Mail Messages:

  89. In addition to this there is a screen that appears every
  90. time Orator is started prompting you to register the
  91. product. This can be eliminated by registration.

  93. Included in the archive is a small program called
  94. ORATVIEW.EXE. This is the program used together with its
  95. PIF file to view files in ANSI format. I myself would
  96. confess that this program requires a little bit of work
  97. carried out on it and it will be one of the first items
  98. to receive attention qhwn time permits.

  100. Warranty
  101. Although rigorous testing has been carried out, bugs cannot be avoided.
  102. I can however guarantee that the worst that Orator could do is not read
  103. your mail<g>.

  110. INSTALLATION
  111.  
  112. 'Unzip' the archive to a floppy or temporary directory on 
  113. your hard drive.
  114.  
  115. Start Windows and from the File menu (Or File Manager) run
  116. the Setup Program on the floppy (Or Temporary directory on
  117. your hard drive)
  118.  
  119. The installation is self explanatory and will carry out all
  120. work necessary.
  121.  
  122. #### NOTE ####
  123. When you first run Orator it will inform you that no
  124. Configuration file has been found and that it is about to
  125. create one. Click on OK and proceed to Orator
  126. Configuration below. Note Orator stops after this initial
  127. configuration and must be restarted after configuration
  128. has been completed.

  131. Orator Configuration
  132. A dialog box reveals the following fields to be
  133. completed. Note Orator attempts to build defaults into
  134. the fields if this is the first time you are running
  135. Orator. Make your changes as required and press (ENTER)
  136. or click on OK

  138. Default QWK Path
  139. Enter the full path name including drive name for where
  140. Orator can find your QWK packets.
  141.  
  142. Default REP Path
  143. Enter the full path name including drive name for where
  144. Orator Can find and should place any of your REPly
  145. (.REP)files.
  146.  
  147. PKunzip (inc Path)
  148. Supply here the full command including path and drive
  149. name for your chosen archiver extract command. Use %1 to
  150. represent the archive name and %2 to represent the path
  151. for the Work files eg
  152.  
  153.       C:\PKZIP\PKUNZIP %1 %2
  154.  
  155. tells Orator that the command PKUNZIP is in library PKZIP
  156. on Hard Disk C. When actually unzipping something the
  157. value of %1 is replaced with the name of the Archive to
  158. be 'unzipped' and %2 is replaced with the path to place
  159. all the files extracted into.

  162. PKZip (Inc Path)
  163. As above but instead give details for the Archiver
  164. Archive Command. %1 will be the Archive file to be
  165. created and %2 will be the files inc path to be added to
  166. the archive.

  168. Signature File
  169. Is not obligatory however the contents of this text file
  170. are appended to all your replies before any tagline. Such
  171. a file might contain your name and USENET address for
  172. example.

  177. Orator Menu/Commands
  178.  
  179. File
  180. This menu is used to Open/Close/Delete packets, Configure
  181. Orator or exit Orator.
  182.  
  183. Window
  184. Is only active when a packet is open. This menu is
  185. otherwise disabled. Submenus to this menu are only
  186. enabled if the relevant information is available. For
  187. example the Bulletins menu won't be enabled if there are
  188. no bulletins included in the packet you just opened.

  190. Welcome - Uses ORATVIEW to show the contents of the
  191. Welcome File
  192.  
  193. Session - Uses ORATVIEW to show the contents of the
  194. Session.TXT
  195.  
  196. Messages - Starts a new form to handle the reading of
  197. Mail See Below

  199. Replies - Starts a new form to Enter/Delete replies
  200.  
  201. Bulletins - Uses ORATVIEW to read any Bulletins
  202.  
  203. News - Uses ORATVIEW to read any BBS News included.
  204.  
  205. Files - Uses ORATVIEW to view the NEWFILES.DAT file.
  206.  
  207. Services - To read any BBS services with ORATVIEW
  208.  
  209. Goodbye - Uses ORATVIEW to read any Goodbye file

  212. Folders
  213. Is used to maintain folders containing archived messages. Folders 
  214. are created during archiving but can then be manipulated from here
  215. allowing archives to be examined or deleted.

  217. Door
  218. Like Window is only active if a packet is open. At the
  219. present one can only configure Qmail doors remotely with
  220. this however future versions of Orator will definitely
  221. include remote configuring of other door types like
  222. MarkMail, RoseMail and Kmail to name but just a few.
  223. Clicking on Qmail reveals the following menu

  226. Add a Conference
  227. To choose a new conference for future mail downloading.
  228.  
  229. Drop a Conference
  230. Allows you to select a conference to be dropped from
  231. future mail scans.
  232.  
  233. Reset a Conference
  234. To select a conference and either set it's message
  235. pointer to a specific message number to begin future mail
  236. scans from or set the pointer to the highest message in
  237. that conference. You can also state a number of messages
  238. short of the highest that scanning is to begin. A dialog
  239. box appears and asks you for the number of messages you
  240. would like the pointer to be set to short of the highest
  241. message in the conference. Blank means leave the pointer
  242. at highest for conference.

  244. Set PCBoard City.
  245. For those Qmail doors on PCBoard systems this allows you
  246. to set the City field in your user profile on the board.
  247.  
  248. Business Phone
  249. For those Qmail doors on PCBoard systems this allows you
  250. to set the Business phone number field in your user
  251. profile on the board.

  253. Home Phone
  254. For those Qmail doors on PCBoard systems this allows you
  255. to set the home phone number field in your user profile
  256. on the board.

  258. PCBoard Page Length
  259. For those Qmail doors on PCBoard systems this allows you
  260. to set the page length in lines in your user profile on
  261. the board.
  262.  
  263. User Password
  264. Allows you to change your password on the BBS remotely.
  265. Remember it wont be valid until after your mail packet is
  266. uploaded.

  269. Set Door Protocol
  270. Allows you to change the protocol used by the door to
  271. upload and download your mail.

  277. READING MAIL
  278. Clicking on the Messages item in the Window Bar menu
  279. launches a new form for the reading of conferences
  280. containing mail. The form contains the following
  281. controls:
  282.  
  283. Next
  284. Shows the next message in the current conference. The
  285. next conference is automatically opened and viewed if you
  286. are already reading the last message in the current
  287. conference.
  288.  
  289. Prev
  290. Shows the previous message. Note if you are already
  291. reading the first message in the conference then the
  292. previous conference is NOT automatically backtracked to.
  293.  
  294. Print
  295. Prints the current message on the Windows 3.x default
  296. printer.
  297.  
  298. List
  299. Lists a summary of all the messages in the current
  300. conference. You can then choose from this list a message
  301. at random that you wish to read.
  302.  
  303. Steal
  304. Orator will attempt to steal the tagline from the current
  305. message and will allow you to view it (/amend it) before
  306. adding it to its database called Taglines.ORA. Taglines
  307. can also be stolen from the middle of messages as follows
  308.  
  309. 1 - Editing the TAGLINES.ORA file with the Windows
  310. NotePad
  311.  
  312. 2 - Marking the message part containing the Tagline(s)
  313.  
  314. 3 - Cut the marked text
  315.  
  316. 4 - Paste the marked text at the end of the Taglines.ORA
  317.  
  318.  
  319. Search
  320. Allows you to search the message base for messages
  321. containing a text sample given by you. The messages found
  322. are stored under the active conferences for you to be
  323. able to read them. The current conference is
  324. automatically dropped and the found messages are shown.

  329. To enter a reply to the current message.

  339. CONFERENCE HOPPING
  340. Either by pressing the Confer button while reading
  341. messages or by pressing the 3D conference control whilst
  342. entering a Reply launches a form for selecting
  343. conferences. The form is divided into two main parts.
  344.  
  345.      1 - A list box called Numerical Conference Groups
  346.      2 - Group contents
  347.  
  348. a search button is also on the form.

  350. Numerical Conference Groups
  351. Shown here are all the conferences available on the BBS
  352. where this packet was downloaded divided into numerical
  353. groups of 250 conferences.
  354.  
  355. Show also in the first position is an Active group which
  356. contains a summary of all conferences containing
  357. messages. You can select a certain conference group by
  358. positioning the mouse over the group title and clicking
  359. the button. If you launched this form by pressing the
  360. Confer button whilst reading mail then this list box is
  361. disabled as you may only select conferences from the
  362. active section.

  364. Group Contents
  365. Shown here is the contents of the numerical (or active)
  366. group you selected in the above List Box. You can then
  367. choose a conference to enter your reply or read messages
  368. in by finding it in the list and selecting it and
  369. clicking your mouse button.

  371. Search Facility
  372. Search facility prompts for a text sample to find a
  373. conference. All conference groups are searched but only
  374. the first match is shown.
