- NetManage Releases Socket Wrencher:
- Windows TCP/IP Stress Tester Unveiled at Microsoft
- WinSock Bake-Off
-
- Provides 24 different measures of TCP/IP protocol
- Stack Performance and Compatibility
-
- Cupertino - April 28, 1994 - NetManage today released Socket
- Wrencher, a new Windows TCP/IP stress testing tool.
- Pre-release copies of Socket Wrencher were provided last week
- to the participants of the "WinSock Bake-Off" held at Microsoft
- headquarters. The bake-off is a regular industry testing event
- hosted by Microsoft to insure compatibility between WinSock
- applications and various WinSock TCP/IP stacks.
-
- Socket Wrencher is being released by NetManage for free
- distribution and will be posted on public information servers.
- It will be widely available for performance and stress testing
- new Windows TCP/IP implementations.
-
- About Socket Wrencher
- Socket Wrencher is a WinSock application that provides more
- than two dozen different measures of protocol stack performance
- and compatibility. Socket Wrencher tests a protocol stack
- independent of any particular application such as FTP, Telnet
- or NFS, giving a clearer picture of how well the stack performs
- in a variety of environments. Performance is tested over TCP
- and UDP in both synchronous and asynchronous operation and in
- both a send only and echo mode. All tests are run with block
- sizes ranging from 1K to 16K bytes. In addition to
- performance, Socket Wrencher provides a set of tests that
- characterize various operating parameters of a WinSock based
- protocol stack such as the maximum number of sockets that are
- available.
-
- Comparing TCP/IP protocol stacks on PCs has received increasing
- attention as different technologies have emerged and the market
- for these products has exploded in size. Comparing protocol
- stacks has been difficult since no standard tests exist. To
- test stack performance, an application is needed to generate
- network traffic. Typically this is done using an end user
- application such as FTP, which provides only a limited picture
- of the stack performance. In addition, test results depend on
- the type of PC, network configuration, host computer and other
- factors.
-
-
- "By providing a WinSock application designed specifically for
- testing, we think we can dispel a lot of confusion in the
- industry and give customers a better idea of what they are
- buying. As it stands today there is a surplus of debate over
- TCP/IP stacks without a lot of facts. Just like WinSock has
- benefited the customer by providing a standard interface to
- TCP/IP protocol stacks, we think the end user and the industry
- as a whole will benefit from any kind of common performance
- benchmarks for these same stacks," stated Zvi Alon, President
- of NetManage.
-
- Availability
- Socket Wrencher is available free from NetManage via anonymous
- FTP at ftp.uu.net in the /vendor/NetManage directory. The file
- is a self extracting zip file called socketw.exe.

- About NetManage
- NetManage Inc. develops, markets and supports an integrated set
- of TCP/IP connectivity applications and development tools for
- Microsoft Windows that facilitate communications and
- administration of personal computers across dissimilar
- networking environments. The company's Chameleon product family
- was the first to specifically target Microsoft Windows
- inter-networking. The de facto industry standards for Windows
- TCP/IP (WinSock and WinSNMP) are based on NetManage product
- specifications. The company's products are sold direct by
- NetManage's and through distributors worldwide. NetManage is a
- public company, whose shares are traded on the NASDAQ under the
- ticker symbol NETM.
