  13. Cupertino - April 28, 1994 - NetManage today released Socket 
  14. Wrencher, a new Windows TCP/IP stress testing tool.   
  15. Pre-release copies of Socket Wrencher were provided last week 
  16. to the participants of the "WinSock Bake-Off" held at Microsoft 
  17. headquarters.  The bake-off is a regular industry testing event 
  18. hosted by Microsoft  to insure compatibility between WinSock 
  19. applications and various WinSock TCP/IP stacks.

  21. Socket Wrencher is being released by NetManage for free 
  22. distribution and will be posted on public information servers. 
  23. It will be widely available for performance and stress testing 
  24. new Windows TCP/IP implementations.

  26. About Socket Wrencher
  27. Socket Wrencher is a WinSock application that provides more 
  28. than two dozen different measures of protocol stack performance 
  29. and compatibility. Socket Wrencher tests a protocol stack 
  30. independent of any particular application such as FTP, Telnet 
  31. or NFS, giving a clearer picture of how well the stack performs 
  32. in a variety of environments.  Performance is tested over TCP 
  33. and UDP in both synchronous and asynchronous operation and in 
  34. both a send only and echo mode.  All tests are run with block 
  35. sizes ranging from 1K to 16K bytes.   In addition to 
  36. performance, Socket Wrencher provides a set of tests that 
  37. characterize various operating parameters of a WinSock based 
  38. protocol stack such as the maximum number of sockets that are 
  39. available.

  41. Comparing TCP/IP protocol stacks on PCs has received increasing 
  42. attention as different technologies have emerged and the market 
  43. for these products has exploded in size.  Comparing protocol 
  44. stacks has been difficult since no standard tests exist.  To 
  45. test stack performance, an application is needed to generate 
  46. network traffic.  Typically this is done using an end user 
  47. application such as FTP, which provides only a limited picture 
  48. of the stack performance.  In addition, test results depend on 
  49. the type of PC, network configuration, host computer and other 
  50. factors.

  54. testing, we think we can dispel a lot of confusion in the 
  55. industry and give customers a better idea of what they are 
  56. buying.  As it stands today there is a surplus of debate over 
  57. TCP/IP stacks without a lot of facts.  Just like WinSock has 
  58. benefited the customer by providing a standard interface to 
  59. TCP/IP protocol stacks, we think the end user and the industry 
  60. as a whole will benefit from any kind of common performance 
  61. benchmarks for these same stacks," stated Zvi Alon, President

  65. Socket Wrencher is available free from NetManage via anonymous 
  66. FTP at ftp.uu.net in the /vendor/NetManage directory.  The file 
  67. is a self extracting zip file called socketw.exe.
