  4. Intended for use in the small office or school environment, Fire Door allows a
  5. single Internet connection to be used by many people simultaneously. Dialup
  6. connections are fully supported with features such as:

  9.      *      Detection of unused connections with automatic hangup

  11. Fire Door fully supports all common Internet protocols, including:

  14.      *      Web Caching

  16.      *      File Transfer Procotol (FTP)
  17.      *      Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
  18.      *      POP Version 3 (Post Office Protocol)

  20.      *      VDO Live
  21.      *      SOCKS 4 and 5.

  23. Fire Door allows you to protect your network from unwanted or unintentional
  24. intrusions, even whilst connected to the Internet. Extensive security features
  25. allow system administrators to control access to external sites as well as
  26. disabling access to any or local machines. Best of all, Fire Door can be
  27. configured via itÆs builtin Web interface from any machine with a Web browser.

  29. Fire Door currently runs on Windows/NT version 3.5x or 4.0 for Intel processors, the
  30. Linux (Unix) operating system for Intel and Solaris 2.5 for Sparc processor. Other
  31. operating systems and processors may become available as time goes on.

  36.                             Installation Procedure

  47. The following is a brief summary, to get you going quickly.

  53. It is assumed that the following have already been installed:
  54.  
  55.   . TCP/IP.
  56.   . Remote Access Service.
  57.   . A web browser, e.g. Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

  60. Procedure
  61. ----------

  63.   1.    As you are reading this you probably have already done the first
  64.     set using the install program to load the files.
  65.  
  66.   2.    At this point you may either run Fire Door as a normal application,
  67.     in a window for a quick demo. Use the Quick Demo icon in the Start
  68.     Menu group created by the installer to do this and go to step 5,
  69.     or you may simply install Fire Door to auto-start as a background
  70.     service as in step 3.

  72.   3.    To install Fire Door so it will automatically run every time you
  73.     restart your system, use the Install Fire Door Service icon. This
  74.     will install the Fire Door service into the system registry. The
  75.     window that is displayed indicates the result of the operation
  76.     and may be closed straight away.

  78.   4.    To start the background service, use The Start Fire Door Service
  79.     icon. The window that is displayed indicates the result of the
  80.     operation and may be closed straight away.

  82.   5.    To access Fire Door for the final stage of setup, you may use the
  83.     Fire Door Home Page icon in the Fire Door Start menu group. Or you
  84.     may start a Web browser on any machine on the Local Area Network
  85.     and enter the URL:

  89.         Where "hostname" is the name or IP number of the machine that is
  90.     running Fire Door. This should bring up the Fire Door Home Page with
  91.         the logo and hyperlinks to online help and configuration pages.

  93.   6.    You may then proceed with the First Time FireDoor setup wizard. This
  94.     will ask a series of questions to set up Fire Door on your network.
  95.  
  96.   7.    Most importantly - PLEASE REGISTER YOUR COPY OF FIREDOOR! Not only will
  97.         it allow you to use FireDoor with more than one user, but the money will
  98.         help us improve the product even further. We will keep you informed
  99.         of new versions of FireDoor via email, and please check our 'Web
  100.         Home Page for information on other Equivalence products.

  103. Known Problems
  104. ---------------

  106. Upgrading from version 1.3 to version 1.4 is not reversable. Internal
  107. registry data is automatically converted to a new format for v1.4. This
  108. means that v1.3 will lose many of its configuration parameters.
  109.  
  110. If you have a "Server reset" error at the end of the wizard, simply try to
  111. finish again. This only appears to happen with Internet Explorer 3.02 and
  112. not with Netscape or Internet Explorer 4. We will continue to analyse the
  113. problem and provide a fix in a later beta.
