  28. 1. WHAT'S NEW
  29. -------------
  30. As of TrayTemp version 2.0, FBS has teamed with The Weather Channel
  31. to bring the most comprehensive weather coverage to your desktop. 
  32. Currently, TrayTemp 2.2 supports over 1450 US cities and over 250 international 
  33. cities. Some new things to check out in this version are:

  35. -Dial up Networking users can now have TrayTemp update its forecast as
  36. soon as they establish their online connection or have it get the forecast
  37. at regular intervals as usual (This option is under the Advanced Settings)
  38. -Additional Domestic and International cities added
  39. -Ability to æApplyÆ new configuration changes and see results immediately 
  40. without having to click OK and come back in.
  41. -Forecasts are now completely in English or Metric units
  42. English = Fahrenheit, mph, inches/Hg

  47. 2. SHAREWARE NOTICE

  49. This software is shareware and thus is for evaluation purposes only.
  50. See shareware agreement upon program startup for all details.
  51. It must be registered for permanent and continual use. This program 
  52. uses the utmost in sophisticated technology to validate whether
  53. or not your shareware has been registered. If it is not, and you 
  54. accept the agreement, then you are running the application as 
  55. shareware, and should do so for no longer than 30 days. If you are 
  56. registered, this software is no longer shareware and you should not 
  57. get the license agreement when you start up. If this persists, please 
  58. contact someone at FBS as soon as possible. Any attempt to try and 
  59. tamper with this software is illegal and will probably render the

  125. A: Do you accept Credit Cards?
  126.     YES. Currently, we accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Discover.
  127.     You can order online from the TrayTemp homepage and your 
  128.     registration number will be emailed to you promptly.

  130. A: When I click on the icon,  nothing happens?
  131.     The call that retrieves the weather will block on that thread, so
  132.     if the tooltip says "Retrieving weather..." (or something to that
  133.     effect depending on which version you are running) then that is 
  134.     what it is doing and you will have to wait until it is done to 
  135.     bring up the properties dialog. This can then be accomplished by 
  136.     either right clicking on the icon to get the menu choices or by 
  137.     double left clicking to bring up the properties dialog.
  138.  
  139.     If you are clicking on the icon and the tooltip is not as above 
  140.     and still nothing is happening, try changing your display settings
  141.     to use small fonts instead of large fonts. This can be done by 
  142.     Right Clicking anywhere on your desktop, then Clicking on the 
  143.     'Properties' item in the popup menu. Now, Click on the 'Settings' 
  144.     Tab. Then, Click on the font combo inside the 'Font Size' section 
  145.     and change it from Large Fonts to Small Fonts. It has not been 
  146.     confirmed yet why this works, but it has helped a number of our 
  147.     users. Fortunately, the configuration is pretty much a one time 
  148.     thing. You put in your city and off you go. The temperature tool 
  149.     tip shows up under the large font settings. So basically, you can
  150.     go in and configure your city settings one time under 'Small Fonts'
  151.      and then put your machine back to 'Large Fonts'. 
  152.     *Note - This only applies to users of TrayTemp 1.1 and below. *
  153.  
  154. A: Why does the tooltip say "(My City) reached. Currently no forecast."?
  155.     Sometimes TrayTemp reaches the weather server but there is no 
  156.     forecast currently available for that city. So this is what it 
  157.     will return. At this point you can check back later to see if a 
  158.     forecast is available or you can right click on the TrayTemp icon
  159.     and choose the 'View extended forecast' option. This will launch 
  160.     your default browser and take you to the extended forecast page 
  161.     for that city at The Weather Channel (www.weather.com). If the 
  162.     'No forecast' message persists, you might want to try another 
  163.     city that is nearby. 
  164.     
  165.     Sometimes TrayTemp returns this message when you are configured
  166.     to go through a proxy server and it is not working right. The 
  167.     way to check this is to try a whole bunch of different cities 
  168.     and if they all come back with no forecast, then it is probably
  169.     the proxy server. In that case, refer to the TrayTemp 2.0 
  170.     specific Question: How do I configure TrayTemp to work with a 
  171.     proxy server.

  173. A: Why does the tooltip say "Internet Error: 'Some error' - Weather server
  174.     unreachable."?
  175.     This means that TrayTemp experienced an error while trying to 
  176.     reach the weather server. An example of a possible error is: 
  177.     Request Timed out - This means it took the weather server longer
  178.     than the configured timeout period to return the weather info to
  179.     TrayTemp. This could mean that the server is really busy or it 
  180.     might mean the connection between you and the server is temporarily
  181.     down. If you try a few times and you get the same thing, the 
  182.     internet is probably temporarily down. Simply wait a little and 
  183.     try again later. Either way, hopefully by providing you the actual 
  184.     error, you/we can solve any problems more efficiently.

  187. A: How do I configure TrayTemp to work with a proxy server?
  188.     Simply bring up the properties dialog and click on the 
  189.     'Advanced' button. Now,    type the IP address of your proxy 
  190.     server into the proxy box. The easiest way to find this out 
  191.     is to ask your LAN administrator or check in the proxy section of 
  192.     your web browser and see if there is anything in there. Also, 
  193.     type in the port number into the port box if your proxy requires 
  194.     a specific port to be used. Then Click 'OK' and you're all set. 
  195.     You must close TrayTemp and restart it before the changes will take 
  196.     effect. If this seems over your head or you did it and it isn't 
  197.     working, don't hesitate to give us a call.

  199. A: Why does the tooltip say "(My City) weather - Currently Unavailable"?
  200.     TrayTemp uses the internet to get its weather info and we all
  201.     know how reliable the internet is, so if for any reason TrayTemp
  202.     cannot reach the weather server at a particular time of day, it
  203.     will return with "weather unavailable". You should just leave your
  204.     retrieval interval alone and it will keep trying that often (every 
  205.     say 5 or 10 minutes). And when it can finally get through, you will 
  206.     see your weather.

  208.     However, your particular office might require you to go through
  209.     a proxy server in order to get to the internet. The easiest way 
  210.     to find    this out is to ask your LAN administrator or check in the 
  211.     proxy section of your web browser and see if there is anything in 
  212.     there. To configure TrayTemp to use a proxy server, refer to the 
  213.     TrayTemp 2.0 specific Question: How do I configure TrayTemp to 
  214.     work with a proxy server.

  216. A: Why does the tooltip say 10 degrees when it's really over 100 degrees?
  217.     TrayTemp was not parsing temperatures over 100 degrees properly. 
  218.     This was fixed in Version 1.1 .

  221. 6. TIPS AND TRICKS
  222. ------------------
  223. A) How to discover the mysteriously amazing easter egg inside of TrayTemp
  224.  
  225. Bring up the properties dialog and click on the 'About' button. This will 
  226. bring up the About screen. If you click on the About screen, it will go 
  227. away. However, if you click on the 'Start' button, it will reveal a 
  228. secret start menu. Then double left click on the 'Run' item in the start
  229. menu.
  230.  
  231. B) How to run multiple instances of TrayTemp to check more than one city 
  232. at a time
  233.  
  234. It is relatively simple to be able to monitor multiple cities at one time. 
  235. Once you have registered the software, create another directory on your 
  236. hard drive. For examples sake, let's call it c:\Program Files\TrayTemp2 .
  237. Next, copy all of the files that are in your current TrayTemp directory 
  238. and paste them into this new TrayTemp2 directory. Now, you can run the new 
  239. TrayTemp by double left clicking on the TrayTemp.exe in this new TrayTemp2 
  240. directory. To set up a shortcut to this file, left click once on the 
  241. TrayTemp.exe in the TrayTemp2 directory so that it is highlighted. Next,
  242. right click on it once and choose copy. Now, right click once on your
  243. 'Start Menu' button. This should bring up a few options. We are looking 
  244. for 'Explore'. Left click on that once. This should launch windows 
  245. explorer and put you in the 'Start Menu' folder. Now, you should see your
  246. 'Programs' folder in the left hand pane of explorer. Expand that folder 
  247. by left clicking once on the + sign before the name 'Programs' in the 
  248. left pane. You should then be able to see the 'Startup' folder. Left click 
  249. once on the 'Startup' folder in the left pane. You should be able to see 
  250. any programs that are in your 'Startup' folder in the right hand pane. Now,  
  251. right click once on any of the white space in the right hand pane 
  252. (not on a file) and choose the 'Paste Shortcut' option. This should paste 
  253. the shortcut to the TrayTemp.exe that we copied earlier. And now you are 
  254. all set. This will launch your second TrayTemp also when you start 
  255. windows. If you do not want it in your 'Startup' folder, simply follow 
  256. the same directions but choose a different folder to paste the shortcut 
  257. into instead of the 'Startup' folder.

  260. 7. NOTE TO USERS
  261. ----------------
  262. FBS would like to thank all of the loyal users of TrayTemp and any of 
  263. our potential new users for supporting the shareware concept. We have 
  264. gotten a lot of good feedback from customers and hopefully some of that 
  265. will be reflected in this version. If not, don't worry. There will be many 
  266. versions to come. In just a short time, TrayTemp has become the number one 
  267. weather program. It has been recognized by such places as Windows95.com, 
  268. TUCOWS Software, and WUGNET. We have also recently teamed with The Weather
  269. Channel, the worlds premier weather provider, to bring the most accurate
  270. and latest weather info down to the pc desktop. Hopefully, as long as 
  271. users keep the need and desire for shareware alive, vendors will continue 
  272. to deliver solid and promising works of software. We are just proud to be
  273. a part of it, and you should be too.
