- TO
-
- Enter the Internet Name or Address you want to call
- You can also enter an optional email address.
-
- The easiest form is just to enter the name of the computer:
- jungle
-
- You could also enter just the IP Address:
- 192.168.0.1
-
- You can call a specific person at that computer:
- tarzan@jungle
- tarzan@192.168.0.1
-
- The Computer might be far away, you need the full address:
- jungle.faraway.com
- Jane@jungle.faraway.com
-
- You can include an Email address:
- chet@jungle+chet
- chet@jungle+"Mr Tusker" <chet@primal.org>
- mom@faraway.fromhome.com+mom@momsmailserver.net
-
- NOTE: Email is always sent via your mail server as defined in the setup panel.
-
- HINT: It is easier to use the address book editor.
-
- @id_boteg_msgtext
- @1111
- SUBJECT
-
- Message text is required for Messages, Popnotes and Mail.
- It can also be used for Chat, but is not required.
-
- This edit window will accept about 32,000 characters of message text.
-
- After entering the Text you can select how you want to send it.
-
- If you enter a message and press 'Chat'; the person you call
- has the choice to take the message instead of chatting.
-
- You may also DRAG AND DROP files onto this window.
- The list of files will be sent to the remote PC
- and the remote user may accept all or some of the files.
-
- @id_boteg_chat
- @1104
- CHAT
-
- Enter the internet name of the computer you want to call
- The 'Chat' button will start a connection to the host.
-

- person you call may choose to take the message instead.

- MESSAGE
-
- The 'Message' button will send your text.
-
- This button is disabled until you enter or edit
- some text in the 'Subject' window.
-
- The message must not be empty.
-
- @1102
- POPNOTE
-

-
- This button is disabled until you enter or edit
- some text in the 'Subject' window.
-
- The message must not be empty.
-
- @1103
-
- Bote can send a message via Email
- instead of a Bote Message or PopNote.
-
- This button is disabled until you enter or edit
- some text in the 'Subject' window.
-
- To send mail you must
- 1) Add or edit some text in the 'Subject' window.
-
- 2) Supply an email address in the 'To' window.
- (an email address is preceeded by a + )
- example:
- bob@faraway.com+bob.smith@mail.site.com
-
- ---------------------NOTE!-----------------------
- You must set up your SMTP mail server
- in the EMAIL setup page for this to be available.
-
- @1106
- MAIL YOUR IP ADDRESS
-
- Bote can send your EMAIL address to your chat partner.
- This is useful if your IP address changes every time
- you login to the internet.
-
- You'll want to see the EMAIL page in
- the setup menu so that you can set the
- name of your mail server and login.
-
- ---------------------NOTE!-----------------------
-
- 1) You must set up your SMTP mail server in the
- EMAIL setup page for this to be available.
- (the SMTP mailer is where we send mail)
-
- 2) The address in the To: field must have an email
- address in it, eg: +mygal@mail.faraway.net
- (this is the person who will receive the mail)
-
- The address book editor can make this easy for you.
-
- @1107
- CONNECT VIA WWW
-
- World Wide Web
- Your Web Browser will be started and the
- address portion of the current selected address
- will be sent to your Web Browser.
-
- @id_boteg_status

- THE STATUS AREA.
-
- This shows the current Bote status,
- and helpful prompts.
-
- @1109
- POPUP EDITOR
-
- Your Editor will be started to
- edit the contents of the message.
-
- Notepad is used for editing.
-
- You can override this by setting the environment variables
- EDITOR
- -or-
- VISUAL
- in your autoexec.bat
- example: set EDITOR=c:\bin\lemmy.exe
-
- @id_cfg_servershowuser
- @3013
- SHOW LOGIN NAME TO CALLERS
-
- Set this to allow Bote to show your login name
- when people call you.
-
- If you disable this you will be announced as
- 'Bote@your.site.com'
-
- If this is not set AND you have NOT logged into your PC
- you will be announced as
- 'NoLoginName@your.site.com'
-
- When someone calls your computer
- and asks for a specific person
- (ie: SomeOneElse@your.site.com)
- they have the option of abandoning the call
- if the person they called is not logged in.
-
- @id_cfg_clientshowuser
- @3014
- SHOW LOGIN NAME WHEN CALLING
-
- Set this to allow Bote to show your login name
- to the person you are calling.
-
- If you disable this your call will be announced as
- 'Bote@your.site.com'
-
- If this is set AND you have NOT logged into your PC
- your call will be announced as
- 'NoLoginName@your.site.com'
-
- @id_cfg_clientnodelay
- @3015
- TCP_NODELAY
-
- The TCP_NoDelay makes your network work a little harder
- but can make your chat sessions smoother in some cases.
- If your partner notices your text arriving in 'bursts'
- and you don't like that,
- setting TCP_NoDelay might make it smoother.
- If you have a very slow connection, it might not improve things.
- (for the technically inclined: this disables the TCP 'Nagle' algorithm)
-
- @id_cfg_servervisible
- @3016
- SYSTEM TRAY
-
- When this is set Bote will be put onto the system tray.
- When this is clear Bote will stay on the task bar.
-
- The 'system tray' is not really part of Windows95, it is
- a part of the windows explorer shell.
- If you use a different shell you should not use this.
-
- NOTE: This setting is NOT saved.
- If you want to set this permanently use the
- command line option when you start Bote
- /v0 Bote on the task bar (default)
- /v1 Bote is hidden, assign a windows HOT key to it to pop it up.
- /v2 Bote on the system tray.
-
- @id_cfg_clientring
- @3017
- OUTGOING RING
-
- Set this to have a ring signal when Bote is calling.
-
- Bote will play the 'ringout.wav' file if possible
- or it will use the PC speaker.
-
- @id_cfg_clientautosend
- @3018
- AUTOSEND ON DROP
-
- Set this to automatically make a connection when you drag
- files onto the chat or 'open new connection' window.
-
- If it is cleared, you must press the 'SEND' button to
- transfer the list of files.
-
- @id_cfg_serverpopnote
- @3019
- ACCEPT POPNOTES
-
- Set this to allow 'PopUp' style notes.
- When people send you a PopNote it will
- appear on your screen in a small window.
-
- When this is clear
- PopupNotes will be received as Messages.
-
- If BOTH Messages and PopupNotes are disabled
- they will be DENIED.
-
- @3020
- VERIFY PERSONAL CALLS
-
- Checks that the Person you called
- is the person that answered the call.
-
- When you call somebody and specify their name
- like: Betty@personell.acme.com
- Bote will prompt you to confirm the call if
- it is answered by anyone other than 'Betty'
-
- @id_cfg_clientwrap
- @3021
- LOCAL TEXTWRAP
-
- Enables Wordwrap while chatting.
-
- Your chat text will be wrapped
- to fit your chat text window.
-
- You should press ENTER to terminate a sentence or paragraph.
- It makes it easier for your partner to read your text.
-
- @3022
- REMOTE TEXTWRAP
-
- Enables Wordwrap while chatting.
-
- Your chat partners' chat text will be
- wrapped to fit your chat text window.
-
- This is convenient when your chat partner
- types without pressing ENTER.
-
- If this is cleared, the chat window
- will use a horizontal scroll bar.
-
- @3023
- BLINKY ICONS
-
- The little Bote Icons can blink when there are errors or unread messages.
-
- If you are using a laptop or a battery powered PC you should disable this.
-
- Originally I put this in 'just for fun' but as it turns out it can make some
- affect on performance. If your PC is not *really* busy it won't matter.
-
- ENABLED: the icons can blink, change color and the status line is updated
- each second, but only if the PC is not busy. This adds a small amount of
- work to your PC about 0.01% load. It keeps more of Bote loaded in memory
- even when it is idle and not answering or making calls.
-
- DISABLED: the icons can only change color, and the status line is always
- updated in real time. When cleared, Bote adds no extra work to your PC
- when it is idle and can use as little memory as possible, but may slow down
- the speed at which the mini web server can respond, (but not much).
-
- Personally I usually have a check mark in this box.
-
- @3024
- WRAP POPNOTES TEXT
-
- Popup Notes text will be word wrapped
- to fit into the size of the popup note,
- When you resize the popup note window
- the text adjusts itself to fit.
-
- When this is cleared the popup note uses
- scroll bars and the text appears as it
- was when it was sent to you.
-
- This can also be set in the menu that is
- available on the Popnote title line but
- there it is only temporary.
-
- @3025
- ALWAYS ANNOUNCE DELIVERY STATUS
-
- If those 'Oh' boxes are bugging you
- you can turn some of them off.
-
- Enabled this and Bote will always announce
- when it has finished sending the messages.
-
- Disable this and Bote will only report if
- there were problems. If the message is
- delivered without error it will be quiet.
-
- @3026
- DYNABOOK ONLINE
-
- Set this to have a short sound when someone comes online.
-
- Bote will play the 'online.wav' file if possible.
-
- @3027
- DYNABOOK OFFLINE
-
- Set this to have a short sound when someone goes offline.
-
- Bote will play the 'offline.wav' file if possible.
-
- @3028
- DYNABOOK BUDDY POPUP
-
- Set this to have a small window popup when you
- Dynabook friends are online to the network.
-
- The border color can be GREEN/online or RED/OFFLINE
-
- @3029
- @3030
- DYNABOOK POPUP TIMEOUT
-
- When the DynaBook scan detects an Online partner
- it will popup a small window with a green border.
-
- Normally the window will timeout after a few seconds.
- You can set that timeout here.
-
- Set this to 0 and it will not timeout.
-
- Instead the border color will change from Green To Red.
-
- @3032=
- REPLY TO
-
- This is NOT an Email reply-to:
- Most people do not need this, the default is blank.
-
- The format of the data is address:port and all of the parts are optional.
-
- If you use a firewall, a non Bote port or DynDNS you might want this.
-
- A remote Bote will normally detect your IP address and use the standard
- Bote port. This is usually correct, but not always convenient.
-
- If you are using DynDNS you might prefer that people respond to your
- DynDNS address instead of the Dynamic Address supplied by your ISP.
-
- Examples:
- bote1.dyn.ml.org
- 193.98.10.232:54637
- MYPC.BEHINDTHEPROXY.COM:8001
-
- There are also some special symbols you can use for 'address'
- * Remote Bote uses the address it sees (default, recommended).
- = Remote Bote uses your current IP name
- # Remote Bote uses your numeric (#.#.#.#) IPaddress.
- + Remote Bote uses your DynDNS domain if the DynDNS update is OK
- otherwise it uses the address it sees. (recommended for DynDNS users)
-
- There is also one special symbol you can use for 'port'
- * Tells bote to use whatever non-standard port you are using.
-
- NOTE! Bote clients prior to Version 1.45 cheerfully ignore all of this.

- PLAINTEXT

-
- @40085
- LEVEL1
-
- The simple data scrambling is fast and efficient
- and is suitable only to deter casual snoopers.
- AutoSensing makes this easy to use.
-
- About the only thing you can say about this
- level of scrambling is that an interloper
- would have to make a conscious effort to
- read the data, it could not be read 'by accident'.
-
- @40086
- LEVEL2
-
- Medium level data encryption.
- Every keystroke generates several binary characters
- of encrypted text, a challenge for the advanced hacker.
-
- AutoSensing makes this easy to use.
-
- This is a convoluted encryption and scrambling routine
- that is useful because it is easy to use and does not
- require an exchange of keys.
-
- This will not work with a firewall or IP Masquerade.
-
- @40087
- LEVEL3
-
- Medium protection based on user supplied keys.
- Seriously convoluted, this just might
- be secure enough for your shopping list!
-
- This will not work with a firewall or IP Masquerade.
-
- @40088
- LEVEL4
-
- Similar to LEVEL3 but strictly key based it should
- work well with firewalls, and IP Masquerade.
-
- Because it does not ensure that the remote Ip address
- is the true IP address it is not as secure as Level 3.
-
- @40094
- RESYNCH
-
- If your communication link is disturbed
- the encryption process may be disturbed.
-
- It can be that one window is encrypted and
- the other window is not, or that the windows
- are using different levels of encryption.
- You may see unintelligible (encrypted) text.
-
- The only way to recover is to force YOUR side
- back to completely unencrypted plaintext with
- this option, and wait, and hope your chat partner
- does the same. You can then try to restart an
- encrypted conversation.
-
- You might also want to send them a PopNote to
- tell them you reset your connection.
-
- @50076
- CLEAR SCREEN
-

- SMTP MAIL SERVER
-
- If Bote can not deliver a message in the normal
- way, it will try to email it to the user.
-
- The SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) mail server
- that you use for sending mail will receive the mail
- and forward it to the user as standard email.
-
- The first line of the message is the SUBJECT:.
- Your LoginName, or 'Bote' is the FROM:
- Your Email address is the Reply-To:
-
- example:
- mail.primal.org
-
- @5213
- YOUR REAL NAME

-
- Most of these settings are used with CHAT.
-
- Verify personal calls applies to ALL outgoing connections.
-
- @5222
- SETUP EMAIL
-
- Bote does not need email for normal use.
-
- Enabling email offers some nice benefits
- such as automatic address book updating,
- and forwarding failed messages via email.
-
- This can be very handy when you use Bote to
- send notes to people about telephone calls
- 'while they were out', If Bote is not running
- on their PC, or their PC is turned off, they
- can receive them later when they return.
-
- Bote will first try to deliver the messages
- as a normal message or popnote, then if that
- fails You may choose to send it by email.
-
- Please Note: that this is a *minimal* email
- ability and only uses the basic SMTP mail
- capability for sending mail.
-
- @5223
- SETUP FILE TRANSFERS
-
- Bote is designed to be safe.
- Nobody wants other people to write unwanted data.
- And nobody should be able to read your files
- unless you allow them to.
-
- Bote does this by allowing you to choose
- the files you will offer to the other person.
-
- When you are that 'other person' Bote allows you
- to select the files you will receive.
-
- You can even disable the ability of people to
- send you a list of files.
-
- @5224
- SETUP MESSAGE LOGS
-
- The Bote Message log can contain a
- history of incoming and outgoing calls.
-
- When people send you Messages,
- or when you redirect PopNotes to Messages
- Bote will record the text of those messages
- in the Log File.
-
- The log file can become quite large when you
- Log everything, or have received a lot of calls.
-
- @5225
- SETUP MESSAGE REPLIES

- ANSWER HTTP REQUESTS
-
- Check this if you want an HTTP server.
-
- It quite limited in what it can do.
- It only serves HTTP GET requests but
- that is enough to handle the most common
- uses for web pages.
-
- The server always gives the single page
- that you specify, regardless of what the
- caller asks for.
-
- If you disable the server the change
- is not immediate, it waits until the
- next HTTP request arrives, then sends
- a RESET and terminates.
-
- You can re-enable the server at any time.

- again, and again, and again, and again,
- and again, and again, and again, and again,
- and... well what happens is they call you
- you say, go -->here, and 'here' is 'here'

- ACTIVATE/UPDATE
-
- An outgoing internet call is made to the Dynamic DNS provider.
- The DNS provider will take your current dynamic IP address
- and bind it to your registered domain name.
-
- When people contact you with your registered name,
- the connection will automatically be routed to your
- PC using the dynamic IP address that your ISP has
- temporarily assigned to your dialup session.
-
- AUTOMATIC
- Bote will examine your IP address every 30 seconds.

-
- Please read this carefully, it is in your best
- interests to read it until you understand it.
-
- 1) When you connect to the internet, your ISP assigns your
- connection a CHANGEABLE or 'DYNAMIC' IP address.
-
- 2) When you disconnect, that same address will be given to
- the next client from your ISP.
-
- 3) If somebody tries to contact you via your registered domain
